Calling 'time' in live NL games? |

First time poster, hello...
I figured this would be the best place to ask, I was playing some no limit side games while a tourney was going on at a casino near me. I have a little experience in NL tourneys and have NEVER been asked to call time while deciding whether or not I wanted to bet. At the live table however, the dealer seemed very unfamiliar with NL. Immediately after I was handed my cards the dealer would be on my ass asking me to check or bet. After I gave her some evil looks she finally yelled at me saying, the moment I get my cards I need to make an action. I know this holds true for limit games, but does the same rule apply to No Limit? Do you have to call time if you want to sit and think for a second? She even called a floor man over and said "this player is taking his sweet old time just to piss me off."..the floorman ignored her comment and noted to me that no profanity would be allowed in the casino (was kind of upset after she flipped out on me, i mean come on...you are getting my money..somewhat..)
Did you know that participating in a poker forum can help you improve your own game? Be it by sharing experiences or simply asking for help, participation in a forum helps you focus and keep 'on topic' which will help you improve your game. You can learn from other players feedback and from their experiences. Why the THP poker forums? We offer one of the best managed texas holdem poker forums available, and the community within is far more friendly than those typicaly found on other sites. We've made a 'lurkers edition' of the poker forum available here on Holdem Poker Online, but we encourage all visitors to register and join in on the conversations on TexasHoldem-Poker.com

Theres not realy a time limit, My guess was she wanted to deal more hands to collect more tips, But i would just do it to piss her off in the end after that for sure. haha. But as long as your not taking to long then it shouldnt have been a problem....

You can take as much time as you want with-in reason. I mean a couple of minutes isn't unheard of. She didn't like you too much or like racquet said, she wanted to speed up the tips.

Maybe they grabbed that dealer from the blackjack tables. That seems the kind of pace she wanted to keep. <shrug>

this thread reminds me of something I"ve been meaning to ask... When you watch the WSOP you may notice that the players will place a chip (or other token) on their cards while they are thinking...
Are they calling 'time'? If so, what are the rules for calling time? I've heard many say that there is no time limit, but surely you cannot sit there for an hour to make a decision.... can you?

When they place a chip on their cards this just means "I haven't folded yet".
People quite often do it, particularly in a game without a dealer, to prevent their hand being mucked by accident. This is particularly important if you are dealing yourself. Believe it or not I have seen dealers muck their own hand in error.

Yeah, you could tell she didn't know what she was doing.
It was a low stakes 1-2 NL table, when a new dealer came she said "2-4 No Limit, no check raising, kill pot" the whole table and the new dealer kind of looked at her like "what??"
It was really horrible, my blood was boiling and I couldn't play correctly, she yelled at me in front of the whole table.
Luckily a new dealer came and I tripled my money..

It looks like the WPT is going to an 'action clock' of one minute. Click on the link to read the entire article. Not sure what the WSOP is doing, if anything..

I didn't like the 'action clock'... at least I didn't like it being 1 minute... they should get at least 2 i think. It takes a nice relaxing game of poker and turns it into a fast paced game.

last years wsop didn't seem to have any time limit.
remember the hand when Moneymaker seemed "overwhelmed" by the occasion, bet was on him, and he just sat there for about 5 minutes looking from Howard Lederer to Johnny Chan, before Chan finally asked him if he was gonna bet, and Money looked down and finally realised that he actually had cards in front of him

Why would a casino now allow "check-raising". Its a natural part of holdem. Either you wanna trap your opponent, maybe force him out with a check raise, or maybe you check with a medium hand, he bets, you get a read on him and decide to raise to not allow him to out draw you for free.
