so im a begginner to the fullest, i just play around w/ my friends , but we get into a lot of situations where we dont know who wins:

lets say: i had an ace of clubs and a 5 of diamonds, and he had a ace of spades and a 5 of hearts.... none of us had anything, so its up to the highest card right?? so who wins?

another situation we've had is:

i have a jack and a 2 and on the river a pair of 4's and a j and also a 2, so obviously i have pair of j's, and i get to choose from the pair of 4's and the 2's, now my friend had a king and he used the pair of 4's to get 2 pair, who wins? does it matter that i have 3 pairs, or since he has the king he wins???

You can only use 5 cards to make up your best winning hand. Therefore, you can never have 3 pair.

I am also wondering what the anser to the A5 / A5 question will be. I thought there was a ranking of suits as well but don't remember that ranking or if it even is played in poker.

Clubs, Hearts, Spades, Diamonds. I think? Maybe this is only for a solitair game or something.

If the best hand is on the board, or the best hands have the same rankings (like the example), the pot is split evenly between all remaining players.

I don't know what happens in the real world if the pot can't split evenly. Anyone?

In regular poker games there is NO ranking of suits and in this case, provided no flush comes up, the pot is split.

If a pot really cannot be split then I personally prefer any excess funds (which will of course be VERY small) to go in the middle as it were and the winner of the next hand takes it.

with the A,5 hand it would be split evenly what my game does if you can't split evenly the one to the left of the button gets the difference. In Omaha its whoever takes High. But like I said thats just my game
