The HomePokerTourney Poker Tournament Rulebook and Robert's Rules disagree on how to handle moving players from one table to another.
HomePokerTourney Poker Tournament Rulebook:
| Quote: | | When a player is eliminated and a move must be made, the player ‘playing a hand’ in the same position (seat), relative to the button, at the highest populated table must move to the eliminated player’s seat. |
Robert's Rules:
| Quote: | | if a player is needed to move from a table to balance tables, the player due for the big blind will be automatically selected to move and will be given the earliest seat due for the big blind if more than one seat is open. |
Does anyone know how they do it in the WSOP or in the majority of casinos?
Did you know that participating in a poker forum can help you improve your own game? Be it by sharing experiences or simply asking for help, participation in a forum helps you focus and keep 'on topic' which will help you improve your game. You can learn from other players feedback and from their experiences. Why the THP poker forums? We offer one of the best managed texas holdem poker forums available, and the community within is far more friendly than those typicaly found on other sites. We've made a 'lurkers edition' of the poker forum available here on Holdem Poker Online, but we encourage all visitors to register and join in on the conversations on TexasHoldem-Poker.com

I think it depends on which point in the tourney it is. At Canterbury (very large, professional casino in MN) they break the tournaments in the early rounds by table. When 10 (or 11 if they are playing 11 handed early) players leave, they will break the largest numbered table. This is done randomly be throwing 10 seat cards on the table and you randomly draw you next seat.
When it gets down to 3-4 tables, they do keep it balanced. If I recall correctly, I think they move based on seat position, not based on where the button is (meaning if a button gets kicked off, a button from another table will take the seat).
I dont recall how the Mirage did it.

I just found this under "The 2004 World Series of Poker TDA Rules" on this site:
| Quote: | | 25. Moving players: In flop games, players will be moved from the big blind to the worst position. |
I guess that answers my question.
