Exposed Cards---Rules Question

Posted Sat Apr 16, 2005 7:17 am GMT by mkultra
Ok I had AK suited and raised it up big pre-flop everyone folded to player A(the SB)... player B (BB) had yet to act and had cards and had made no verbal declarations or actions of folding

I observed player B blatantly looking at player A's whole cards which were not being protected very well and I asked if they saw what they were. He said "Yes" and I requested to know what the cards were.

They both thought I was crazy....player B said he was going to fold anyway...player A said he thought player B had folded (which was impossible cause he was a blind). They did not think I was entitled to the information even though player B had an advantage.

We all got heated and they both ended up folding face up and I mucked face up as well cause I was mad

I wouldnt have made an issue of it if player B had folded already but as it was received valuable information that I thought EVERYONE at the table was entitled to.

I also asked player b why they would look at someone's whole cards and they accused me of calling them a cheater.

Who is right and is there a link to the rule?

My homegame is pretty liberal about showing live hands to people that have folded....something I hate but this was different as both hands were live.

Thank you

The simplest and most functional rule is:
Do not show any hands/cards during play.

Apart from that I think that any card showed to a player not in the pot can be requested shown to all players AFTER play, any card showed to a player still in the pot can be requested shown to all players still in the pot there and then.

As player B had not verbally or taken any action to indicate folding, I would count him as a live player and request that the hand be shown to all. After all, seeing that hand could very well have influenced player B into folding and every player around the table should have the same advantage. Besides, even IF he folded, player B should not act out of turn, but await his turn and fold then. So in my book there is no doubt he was a 'live' player when this happened. (And as a sidenote, when his turn came he should be obliged to follow the act he did out of turn if one of the other players at the table requests it, iow if he now decides to stay in, he must fold if one other player at the table requests it.)

But it is pretty controversial, as some books and systems speak of showing your hand when deciding wether to call an all-in, but IMHO, the simplest rule is the one above..

But most of all I think it is a question of etiquette along the poker table, and I think showing hands is very, very rude.

yah he was live player A should of had to show his hand since he showed it to anouther Live player

in the homegame i play in once in a while.
its also Preaty Liberal about showing hands when people are no longer live to someone.

and you can Requist to be able to fold out just have to aks the dealer in the home game if you can.
basicly thats only done if u know your not going play your hand and you want a second or two head start to the Fridge or Bathroom or to sneak a smoke outside.

but i would personaly never fold out of turn and would never need to in this game since we take tons of breaks it seems Laughing

Plus, you gave away a tell of how good a hand you had, by the level of intensity of your complaint.
