calling down with 2nd best pair |

Lately it seems that every time I get a little bit ahead, I find myself blowing it all calling down with a hand I know to be second best. usually I justify it by telling myself (1) I have outs, or (2) I might still be ahead. The problem is, I don't know if these justifications are justifyable or hogwash. Here is an example. I am up about seven big bets, and then...
I get A2 in BB. 5 see the flop, which is Ace, rag, rag. I bet, get raised and call. The turn card pairs the board, so I call, hoping for a big card on the river so my kicker won't matter (I'm basically hoping for a split. With 5 1/2 big bets in the pot, is it even worth it?). The river is a ten. I figure he probably would have raised pre-flop with something better than a ten, so I call and he shows AQ.
A few haznds later, I raise with AA, and get a few callers. The flop is 345, and BB bets. I raise, he 3 bets. I know he can beat one pair, even aces, but Aces are hard to fold, and I have a gutshot as well. The turn is another 4. Damn, he may have just filled up, leaving me with 2 outs. Then again, if he has 53, I'm ahead now. River is a rag, and he shows 76o.
Am I wasting money with these calldowns, or are are such losses just part of the game? even if they are, is there any way to minimize them?

I have a program that tracks players. I base my decisions on the player's stats. If they have a low PFA it doesn't take much to make me fold. On these boarderline decisions it's important to have more information the cards.

To add: a general rule I have: if it's a made hand that's not good enough to raise with on the flop, fold. It's worth the extra small bet to find out where you stand. Also, with position a raise on the flop will usually get you a cheaper showdown (I raise the flop it checks to me on the turn, and I check behind).
^^^For FL of course.

Let me give you a new rule to follow and you can never ever break this rule. Do not under any circumstances ever play to just split! Ever! Think about it, this will never ever be profitable. Are you playing limit or NL? When you have aces you only want one maybe two callers, you need to raise the pot enough to get everyone out. Also, if you raise the pot, and someone bets into you on the flop, and you raise and get reraise most of the time that means you are beat, keep in mind AA is only one pair.

I use pokeredge. Others use pokertracker. In general pokertracker is probably better.
