jacks preflop

I'm a somewhat inexperienced player so I always question my position on certain hands. Anyways, I was playing a house game with some friends and got pocket jacks first hand of the game. Checked around to me I raise, 2 callers. Flop doesnt help me but also doesnt give any overcards. Same with the turn and the river. I raise it and get reraised by a guy who normally plays nothing hands for the fun of it. End up losing the hand to trip 5's or something where he picked up the third on the flop. Should I have played more agressively preflop on jacks? My initial rase was 10 chips of 50 starting.

2nd hand I get pocket jacks again.... this time I go all in and get 1 caller who hits a pair of kings on the river. Is there a better way to play jacks or is it based around the people.

Neither play was really wrong. 20% of your stack is pretty decent a raise, and most of the time you would have won. Besides perhaps remembering to re-evaluate your hand EVERY round (like you did when you noticed that there we no overcards to beat you) would be the best idea, but these kind of beats will happen, again, and again. There's not much you did "wrong".

As for the second one.... You're down to a short stack and you get pocket jacks. All in is your only option, or a nice reraise preflop to steal a decent pot. Yet again.. you didn't really do anything "wrong".

Think about it.. if you have jacks, and the guy called your 20% with his fives... what would you prefer, that he went in with BETTER cards than you? I mean, you bet a decent amount of money and you were the favourite, by far. The odds didn't go your way in the end, but what else could you really ask for pre-flop?

I think what you did was fair enough but depending on the players I would have been tempted to make a feeler bet on the flop.

Since they called the pre-flop raise I would suspect they had overcards and checked the flop because they didn’t hit, so I’d prefer to get some information now (with the added potential they could fold) rather than after they have 2 free cards they could improve with.

Its quite simple. Pocket jacks suck.

yea i dont really like them much anymore that they let me down in the first 2 hands of the game and left me waiting around 2 hours for the next.

JJ is supposed to be the 4th or 5th best hand in the game. In my opinion it is neither.

Nowadays I treat it similarly to any other low/medium pair. I lost so many times with it in the past by raising and playing it aggressively that it became my most hated hand of all.

Now I no longer hate it. I just pretend its a pair of 2s and if I don't hit a set on the flop I rarely bet. Its easy.

I like jacks and tens, but I think you need position for them to be a really good hand.

I agree with team_deuces. I also think pocket Jacks and pocket queens are more easily played post flop -- raise to eliminate, then be prepared to lay it down to raises with one or more over-cards.

In this specific hand though, your over pair was beaten by a set. It happens sometimes, beware of reraises from non-maniacs.

raise it !
while the chance of overcards turning up is unreal.
U can always hit the jack and make a monster, or be best with low cards on board. Fold those jacks to aces and kings. I lost alot of money to that kind of thing. Pokertracker slapped it in my face. 250 dollars wasted over 6 months with the pocket jacks.....

i play 1/2 limit.....
that sucks
