A bluff... but a tough decision on it |

Hero is dealt T T on the button.
Preflop:
-- 3 folds, MP (loose) calls, folded to CO, CO raises 4xBB to $2 (I imagine he has 88-AA, AJ-AK at this point, maybe KQ), Hero calls, blinds fold, MP calls
Flop: A 6 2
-- No set, oh well. Probably dump it to the raiser's bet.
-- MP checks, CO bets $2...., Hero raises to 6$ (trying to push him off an underpair), MP folds, CO calls
-- I'm pretty sure with about a 10-12$ bet on the turn, I can push him off his KK/QQ, if he calls again, I'll shut down.
Turn A
-- Here's where it gets complicated. Do I check behind to act like I'm slowplaying an Ace then fire on the river? Wouldn't a bet here look a little suspicious? If I actually had an Ace, I'd almost certainly check behind.
-- CO checks, Hero checks
River 3
-- CO checks, Hero bets 11$, CO folds
Before he folded, he told me he had KK. He asked me if I'd show, and I told him yes... and showed my TT.
One of the other people at the table said, "I knew the guy didn't have an Ace! He checked behind you on the turn! Why would you fold?"
It got me thinking.... if you're gonig to bluff like that, would it be better to just bet out the turn, even though I probably wouldn't if I really had it?

that is always tough and a lot depends on who you are up against. I recently played a little 15/30 up from my live 8/16 game. At 8/16, pair on the flop (JJ8), you bet you take the pot -most of the time. 15/30, you will be check raised in a heartbeat-even if they have junk. Then you need to decide if you want to reraise at some point or give then hand up.

Golf, it depends on your image.
I bet out half the pot looking to get "value" and then bet a 2/3 bet on the river looking to get some more "value". I like to do this against tighter opponents or w/players who have played w/me before and know I'm capable of doing this with or without the goods.
Otherwise, checking behind on the turn is also acceptable and has many merits to it.
One, if you don't know his tendencies.
Two, you can keep the pot small if this guy is sandbagging you.
Three, you can use your position to decide how to proceed on the river.
in this hand, your check behind was good ESPECIALLY AFTER YOU RAISED THE FLOP.
I see you making more of these moves lately. :D

Check behind if that's your standard procedure.

I've really been learning a lot lately. I used to think that bluffing was just picking random pots and trying to force people off their hands. I used to look for times to bluff.
Now, I'm just analyzing situations where I think I can probably get away with a bluff without having to show my cards. I will show occassionally to not appear to be a total rock, but I don't want people thinking I do it often.
It took me a long time to learn to let bluffs come to me, instead of me trying to go out and find them.
