New User...Question about 10g Faux Clay and 11.5g Dice Chips |

First time poster, longtime lurker here. Just want to first thank everyone for the great info here...definitely keeps me busy.
So despite my desire to have a very nice set of chips, I am a poor college student. For this reason I am stuck with a set of the infamous dice chips i got for free through one of those referral sites. I am also looking to enlarge my set with the 10g Faux Clays I haveheard good things about.
My question is, has anyone successfully applied labels to either of these chips? I have searched through the forums, but can't seem to find an answer. I really want to spice up the chips, because it seems to be a cheap way to significant;y enhance their looks. If anyone had pictures of the results, that would be great too.

Personally, I really didn't like what they did to the chips at that link but I do have 1000 of the Faux Dice chips and I think they're great.
The thing about applying labels to them is the center isn't recessed so a label would effect the stackability a lot, as well as the sound. Sound, feel and price are the primary reasons for buying these chips IMHO. Obviously it is personal opinion as to whether the change in sound is negative but with out a doubt it will change, so you have to decide if altering 1/3 of the chips attributes is worth it.
Back to the label it self. Without the recessed center the label becomes the only contact point while the chips are stacked - hence the reason I say stackability will be negatively effected. Also the other effect is that the labels will wear out much more quickly and could end up making the chips look pretty bad over time.
Just food for thought.

id watch out, referal link to another forum wont be good news to the spam police.
also i got to hand it to someone who has the patience to put all those stickers on. It would drive me insane.

Thanks for the info. I guess I may get the labels and put them on a few chips first, and play with them for awhile, just to see how it works out before I do it to the whole set.

Yeah....I don't really understand how that guy got the whole label thing to work with his 10 grammers. I tried applying a sticker (one of the samples I got) to a 10 grammer of mine, and it really didn't work all that great. Label was really easy to pull off and the stacking really stank. Not the label's fault...BTW.

i have 2k of the faux chips and lemme tell ya somthing, asie from custtom set (ie; chipco,pc.com,paulsons etc...) these are the best chips out there. they feel look and sound better than any other chip out there IMO. At .06 cents a chip how can you go wrong? After putting lables on them they really come alive aswell. The next gens arent even close to being a casino chip, they might as well be in the 11.5 gram category. THe faux chips have no metal inside them, that right there makes they sound and feel more like a casino chip than anything with a metal slup in it
i have 20 paulson sitting here and im shuffling both and the only difference that i feel in a little less weight in the faux' Other than that they just need to add some edge spots on to them.
did i mention they are .06 cents a chip?

I agree with the poster who commented on the adverse effect labels will have on *most* 11.5g chips due to the lack of the recessed center. I'd experimented with this and found two other observations that are pertinent.
1. 1 inch labels must be folded down inside the groove in the chip. This takes a LOT of work and I didn't like the result. The edge has to bunch a little and often resulted in a wrinkle around the edge.
2. It was much, much harder to center the label on the grooved chips. I'm sure that you could get the hang of this after a dozen or so (fewer if you're sober), but I didn't get it consistently right in the twenty I tried.
I also tried 3/4" labels but don't. Too small to do anything for the chip and the stackability gets even worse.
I'm now fooling around with an 11.5 "Texas Holdem" marked chip that does have a recessed center. 5 Star Deal had these down to 0.13/chip but just raised the price back up to 0.17. I'm not wild about the colors but 1" labels fit very, very nicely into these chips.
I've had other posts about the NexGens. To summarize, I like the Las Vegas chips but don't like that they have "Las Vegas" on them. I don't live there. I like the River Poker Chips (I do live by a river) but don't like the mixed edge spot styles (White, Red, and Blue are different from the others) and the quality control on some (green and purple) is pretty poor.
I will probably wait for something better to come along. I've got 1,400 11.5g suited chips that are OK, so the big issue for me is how much compromise am I willing to make to get chips I like better but that aren't perfect. I won't spend much more than $0.30/chip, I just don't NEED them that bad (though readers of this forum will see that "need" has varying shades of meaning). I'm a business professor and I think that the market will eventually produce something I'll be much happier with. Of course a couple of more days like the one I had yesterday at the local card room may shift my demand curve upward resulting in a new equilibrium position and a new set of chips.
By the way, I'd definitely stick with something that lets you select the color mix. IMHO you don't need more than three colors (or maybe even two) if you're playing Hold 'em. If you're playing other games then more colors may be better.
