Raising Before Cards Are Dealt . . . ?

Posted Sun May 01, 2005 9:16 am GMT by ALEN-TNT
My question is, is a player that will act first when the cards are dealt allowed to raise without even getting the cards yet? Please only respond if you know the answer. This question was kind of hard to word, any help is appreciated.

Yes once blinds are posted and the deck is riffled, that hand is considered in progress. Therefore, action may begin and that guy can raise in the dark as its known or even fold in the dark. Other than shock and awe value, I see no real good reason for raising before you have cards, but you can.

You can do a strattle pre-deal too. Which is just posting 2xBB if you are UTG. The guy next to you could technically straddle you as well.

If you strattle you can 3-bet your own raise, correct?

Yeah. Some people call it live blind, since you get the usual BB option of raising when called.

And people can't straddle/bet more when the maximum amount of bets are reached through straddling.

Not all places allow a live straddle, so be careful on that.... but raising in the dark is fine if you're first to act.

Most places will allow a two-bet live straddle, meaning that the bettor gets an option to raise, and that the cap for the round is increased by one bet. You can also raise the straddler in the dark, but that bet is "dead" since you cannot raise and it does not increase the cap. In tournaments, you are allowed to raise in the dark UTG, but that bet is not live.
