KK UTG

Posted Mon May 02, 2005 11:01 pm GMT by Zig
Hello,

This was a first for me, scenario wise. I was getting short stacked in a tournament, but not terribly so, I still had about 10BB. I was dealt KK and first to act...table of 8.

I didnt want a weak ace in that could hit, but I wanted a couple callers to maximize the pot....so I bet out 3BB. As it turned out all folded...should I have tried slow playing UTG and just calling, or..., or...?

Just wanted to hear any other opinions.

Thanks
Zig

Anytime I get AA or KK utg I usually just limp in hoping for a raise from later in the table. If the raiser comes, I'll usually push in a MTT. If no one raises, I'll put out a big bet on the flop and if I get anyone playing back at me, I'll lay it down right there or play it as cheaply as possible.

I will always raise my standard raise (3x BB) when I have high pocket pairs. The last thing you want is to see is the small blind get to see for 1/2 bet and the BB for free if every just calls. When you get 3 undercards how sure are you that they did not hit 1 if not both of their cards.

Sucks when good starting hands only get you the blinds but it happens. Hurts even more to lose to a big blind special. I play aggressively and hate to let anyone see a card for free, it may just be the one that will hang you, make them earn it.

It's important to raise at least something to prevent limping, and to know at least something about the strength of your opponent's hand. If you don't, the BB has a very disguised hand and you have no idea if the flop hit him well or not.

All-in preflop. With your stack size you're likely to get action. This particular hand no one had anything, that's not going to be the case very often.

Edit: actually how much did you have relative to everyone else?

I only limp under the gun if the table is aggressive and I'm nearly certain someone will raise behind me. If you've got a passive table with a lot of limping going on, you need to raise, or you might find yourself in a 5 way limpfest.

Being short stacked like you were, sometimes just pushing is a good idea - it looks desperate and sometime you get a call from someone who thinks you are pushing a low pocket pair.

I usually raise with KK UTG, but with lesss than 10 BB, you really need to double up. It would be a shame to just walk with the blinds, so I'd limp and pray for a raise.

I never get mad when everyone folds to my KK anymore...

Its all about perspective.

Would you rather limp in and lose to some guy's 72o on his big blind, because the flop came 729 rainbow?

Each time everyone folds to my 3xBB raise when I have KK or AA, I win a smal pot.

Each time my KK or AA gets outdrawn because I didn't raise enough, I get another grey hair on my chin.

You do the math... Laughing
