Loose heads up

Posted Wed May 04, 2005 4:43 pm GMT by kellerumd
Most tournaments I play I waver on the side of being too conservative, but once it gets to heads up I will play any hand if it is not raised, and depending on the raise I will still play a lot of hands. This usually works for me because I have established my conservative image and in a heads up game you are more than likely to have to live cards. Personally I don't like playing heads up but it seems like I have a good winning percentage using this strategy. anyways, I was wondering how many different hands a person should play heads up? I just want to compare it to my style.

kellerumd, I don't think you should be loose AND passive heads up. Don't just play a lot of hands (don't call). You gotta be in there raising with any high card hand preflop. If you have a good hand, don't call his bet, re-reaise him! If you have two low unpaired cards, just lay it down to a raise. But make sure you take control of the majority of hands by raising preflop. You'll probably win a lot of blinds and even if you miss on the flop, you can usually pick it up with a raise unless he hit also. Just don't overplay your hand too much or you might get trapped. But a reasonable (3-4x BB) raise every other hand or so doesn't overcommit you and will able you to pick up the majority of the pots.
