Over valued trips???

Posted Sun May 08, 2005 8:26 pm GMT by Hank
Did I over value my trips here? I was staying in to spike a set on the flop and I got it! I just called the first bet to slow play my trips. But then the dude rerases over the top all in. I am not sure I did the right thing by calling here.

I am only going to show the play to the decision point. After I get a few replies I’ll show the outcome.

Interesting hand. I don't really think you made any mistakes playing the hand. The only two hands you could be behind are AA and QQ, neither of which are too likely, given the play so far in the hand.

Here's how I read your opponents:

Ibefishing - he had TWO chance to raise before the flop and he called both times. I can't put him on a hand stronger than A8.

Bulldog65 - He min-raised against a bunch of limpers, so I'm having trouble putting him on QQ or AA, although he could be a moron. I think the most likely holding here is AQ or AK, with at least one diamond.

Either of these guys might be holding a diamond draw after the flop. I assume since you posted the hand, you ended up losing it. If it was to a flush, that's life - you still had to go all-in on the flop, because you were ahead. If you lost because one of these guys misplayed AA or QQ before the flop, I don't think there was really any way to discern that given the way they played. I think you did fine, and 9 times out 10 you would have taken down a monster pot.

Well Nick,

I did actually win the hand. But you have a pretty darn good read on these guys.
I had put ibefshin on two pair and bulldog65 on a pair of aces when I made the call. If bullgog65 would have been more aggressive pre-flop I would have definetly have folded my eights.

At the time I made the call I thought it was an easy call, but after reading the hand history I did not feel so confident.

Thanks for your input Nick.

Always nice to see that case 8 show up on the turn.

That was an awesomely bad call by the guy with the kings.

How'd you like the min-raise preflop?

Hank,

I don't know this is a tough spot for me.

Doesn't this feel like Scotty Ngyuen, "you call it's going to be all over, BABY!!" I wouldn't be suprised if he tabled AA or QQ.

Nick, your hand reading is getting goot. Notice the ace on board is the same as the two flush so we can knock out the nutflush draw. So the early position lead bet can be read as top pair and good kicker, most likely a diamond.

Now, the min-raise on the flop is what gets to me. Since hero smooth-called, a set over set situation is almost forced to getting some money into this pot and can't afford to see another diamond drop. I say this because hero's call sure looks like a diamond draw and not a slowplayed underset.

So, how much would raise if you had the nuts but wanted action? how's about the minimum? That way, you can have the moron EP player to bomb the pot, get rid of the flush draw and then move in w/the nuts. Sounds like a plan?

But wait, wouldn't AQ or AK do the same move to see where he's at because that hand also can't afford to see a diamond drop and get out played on later streets?

Hmmmm......so this is why i like to play live. Oh yeah, raise the flop. If you get a smooth call from the preflop min-raiser, you're probably beat. If he comes over the top, depending on how tricky he/she is, i'd have to put them on AK or AQ.

Glad it worked out for you.

I'm working on the math right now. I'll post it in a bit.
