I am dealt KK UTG at an online 2/4 table. Players A and B are the worst at the table being supreme calling stations.
I raise. Player A cold-calls from MP and Player B calls from BB.
Flop is 3 handed (3.5 BB)
9 6 4
Player B bets. He wouldn't bet here w/ just a draw and I think its A9 most likely. I call, with the intention of raising the turn. Yes, there is a flush draw and straight draw, but I feel that Player A will call with any draw and will definately pay 2 bets and probably more if its a flush draw or open-ended straight draw, so I raise the turn on any blank. Player A calls as expected.
Turn (5 BB): 7
Not exactly the blank I was looking for, but it I go ahead when Player B bets I raise. Player A cold-calls 2 bets and Player B 3-bets. Now I have seen B overvalue a lot of hands, including top pair. I think he might have 9 7 or 9 6 but A9 is more likely. I cap the turn here, thinking that I am probably ahead but I might get player A to fold a weak draw here and get a free showdown if a blank hits. Player A calls 2 more bets and Player B calls.
River (17BB): 8
This is a bad card for me obviously. Player B comes out firing again and I don't think my hand can even win 1 in 18 times here with Player A calling all those bets, someone has a set, 2-pair and now a 4 card straight on the board. I fold. Player A calls.
Player B has 10 10 for the gutshot straight. Player A has some Q 7 crap (told you he was bad).
My question: In this case capping the turn was the best play here but will it usually be the best play in these types of situations?

i agree with your play.. only thing i woulda done was raise on the flop cuz of flush draw.. but it wouldnt have mattered cuz he had an over pair as well as u

I dont cap with an overpair unless I believe it will save me bets on the river.
The games I play, not many will 3 bet w/ just top pair, so I am likely beat and in call down mode.

I thought that I would cap the turn in order to drive out the player in the middle who I thought was drawing at something.
I don't raise the flop because I know if the player in the middle has anything to draw at he will do it for two small bets. It also allows the first player to lead out again on the turn. I thought that I might be able to drive him out if I made him call 2 bets cold (it didn't, but it made him pay).
I agree with you Dave that if he 3-bet that turn it probably means a small two-pair (i don't think he would lead out on the flop and turn with a made straight and me being the aggressor). I normally would then go into call-down mode as well, but I thought if I capped I, like you said, might get a free showdown and drive out another player.
