Laying down trips

Posted Wed May 11, 2005 1:34 pm GMT by pattondad27
I had wired 4's and the flop comes 4h 3h 2h. Fearing a straight or a flush, I check and my opponent bets $40. I call. The turn comes 6s. I check and my opponent bets $60. I lay down my trips with GREAT hesitancy!!!! We rabbit hunted and the river comes 2c. I would have made a BOAT!!! He said he had the flush, but didn't show his cards. How would you guys have played this hand??? The same, different??? HELP!!!

depends if it was raised preflop... if it was raised i wouldn't worry too much about the straight or worst yet straight-flush... figuring he would be either on the flush draw of have the flush on the flop ... after he bet 40 on the flop i'd move all in with the top set.. figuring it to be a nice semi-bluff... if he called all you have to do is pair the board and you take down a nice pot.. this is of course at a cash game... in tourney play i'd be maybe a bit more cautious... but that all depends...

I believe he didn't raise before the flop, triggering my fears of a straight or a flush. I believe I should have raised or moved all in on his $40 bet after the flop. For some reason I didn't though. The look on his face gave me the impression that he had monster. Knowing that the 2 came on the river, I wish I would have gone all in. I lost about $130 on that hand, but could have won a huge pot if I had just played it smarter. I learned from that one and maybe I can pick up a few big pots in the future b/c of it!

I would bet the flop.

I don't like the check on the flop, it screams weakness. You can go out betting here, you have good outs for a boat/quads as a savior, plus your opponent will have a harder time bluffing you out of the bot. Usually I could slowplay a set, but not on that flop.

*edit* I didn't see the note above, so sorry for being the echoboy. Smile

As for drawing for the boat/quads on the river that is simple pot odds/implied odds. You have 10 outs of the remaining 46 cards for making a boat/quads plus some people get married to flushes, so you can often extract a good bet on the river, and you can make more marginal calls against people like that.
