Bad play? or bad luck?

Posted Wed May 11, 2005 11:54 pm GMT by age_of_sages
We were down to about 400 people and play was tightening up, I figured I had to make a move since I was getting down to just over 10x bb. It looked like a good steal opportunity to me. I'm just wondering if anyone else makes this play? or should I have just limped?

Big stack was fairly new to the table, but seemed to call alot and win with some iffy hands, I didn't put him on what he had at all.

Well... ATo isn't a great hand to go "all-in" on. I probably would have raised about 4XBB and if I miss the flop, bailed.

a push there is way too aggressive IMO. A 10 (not suited even) is not a bad starting hand, but generally not worthy of pushing in pre-flop with unless you are in danger of being blinded out which is NOT the case here. this was a full table to boot, making the chance of someone having a better starting hand than you pretty damn good.

I dont mind going all in w/ A 10, I HATE HATE HATE going all in w/ A 10 when the 2 big stacks have limped in already. I do not want a call w/ A 10, and if one of them has a AK AQ AJ A10 or just about any pocket pair, they are likely going to call you.

good point Dave about two big stacks limping in, i neglected to mention that.

Same thing happened to me last night but I was closer to the bubble. It started with 840+ and I was in 36th or so. I get A Club T Club and blinds are 500/1000. I have about 12,000 and there are only 5 spots left to the money. I was in late position and bet 3x BB and only got called by one player. Flop was 7 Club 9 Club 4?. Its checked to me and I bet 3x again the other guy raises all-in and has me barely covered. I called (on a stupid ass draw) and get no help. Dude flips over QQ.

The whole time I was thinking about calling I couldn't help but think about trying to win and not just finish in the money, but I still think it was a horrible move. Would any of you had made that call?

That is a tough one. I probably would, then kicked myself afterward.

You are a 46/54 dog w/ your outs being the 9 clubs and 3 aces. So mathmatically speaking, you should call unless you put him on 2 pair or trips.

Being on the bubble, you might want to lay down and ignore the pot odds. But if it is a tourney where you need to top 10 to get REAL money (more than 3-4 times your buy in), then I may call anyway and risk it.

thats why i was so mad, i joined a $30 MTT just to see how it was (I have only played $5 til now), and 60th would have paid me $120, not great but not horrible. The problem was, I was looking at the payouts for top 5 and the fifth was 1,500 and 1st was around 6,000 so I figured it was worth the risk.

Im no so sure now Laughing I ended up joining a $30 5 person Sit and Go right after that on tilt and got down to 135 chips in fourth place. I ended up doubling up 4 or 5 times and won it. That took most of the edge off, but I am glad I'm not the only one who would call that.

Thanks for the input guys, I kinda figured it was a bad play but I wanted to hear the thought of those more experienced than myself. Goes to show I still have a LONG way to go in becoming a good tournament player.

Well A 10 isn't the worst hand in the world. The most surprising thing about it is that pocket jacks actually held up!
Wonders will never cease.....
