Ok, situation.....:
Me and a friend were playing some texas hold em. He went all in, I matched. The cards on the table had a pair, and neither of us had anything in our hands. So, does that mean that the person w/ the high card wins or is it a split pot? (there is some difference of opinion here between my friend and i....i dispute that the game is played using all the cards, best 5 card hand wins, regardless of whats in your hand. he claims that since neither of us had a third card for three of a kind, it would be a split pot) Can someone please clarify??!

thanks for the reply, however, that shows as the example being that both players have a card that makes a pair w/ the table cards. our dispute is that neither of us had a card in our hands to make a 2nd pair or a third of a kind. it is still my assumption that regardless if u have nothing in ur hand, the highest card hand would win, due to the pair being on the table.....is this correct?

Best 5 cards means just that. It doesn't matter where they come from, be it your hand or the board.

You always have something in your hand....if might not make a pair or help make a flush or three of a kind, but its still something in that it can help your kickers. Kickers are the leftover cards in a 5 card hand that determine who wins when both players have something like a pair of 8s...Now if the board's other cards are higher than both players' cards then, the pot might be split cuz both players have the same kickers....
In your example, it's probably the person w/ the high card who would win. but the if the board was something like 8 8 A K Q and you two had stuff like 10, 9 and J 9....then it would be a split, cuz you would both have the board as your hand....
If you tell me exactly wut the cards were i can tell you what happens at the showdown

Okay, you both make the best 5 card hand possible
You have a pair of 8s, King high w/ 8 8 K 10 7
He has a pair of 8s, Queen high w/ 8 8 Q 10 7
You win, since you have a better kicker (King)....the 10s and 7s don't matter really since the highest kicker is the one that counts....
so if he had 8 8 Q J 10 you would still win
Also, suits don't matter....you never have to worry about a heart being better than a club or anything like that....if all the cards are the same disregarding the suits, then its a split pot (assuming there isnt a flush or straight flush)
