The Most Common Online Tells

Online tells are almost always related to the speed with which an opponent acts. For example, online it is possible to use the "in turn" buttons or you can wait until it is your turn to act and click on the desired button. When using the "in turn" buttons, a player can select check/fold or bet/raise before the action gets to them. There is clear distinction in speed between these two methods of acting and, in certain situations, it can provide you with advantageous information.

1. The instant call after you bet: Most players who call your bet immediately have a weak calling hand. These players want you to believe they have a stronger hand and hope that you will not bet into them again.
2. The delayed check: Most players who take longer than normal before checking to you do not want you to bet. They are attempting to display strength because they want to see the next card for free.
3. The delayed bet: When an opponent thinks for a long time and then bets, they will usually be holding a strong hand. They want you to believe they are weak so that you will call/raise.
4. The instant bet/raise on the river (Texas Hold'em): The player who utilizes this move will usually be holding a very strong hand. By raising or betting so quickly, they are trying to make you think they are bluffing. This move can also be used on the turn and generally, though not as frequently, denotes strength.
5. The instant check: A player sitting in late position who uses the "in turn" check/fold button is usually weak. Often, they are playing at multiple tables and are hoping to save time by using the "in turn" buttons.
6. The bet into on the turn (Texas Hold'em): When a player has checked and called on the flop and then bets into you on the turn, it usually indicates weakness. This type of bet often means that they picked up a draw or that they are semi-bluffing with a draw they picked up on the flop. Strongly consider raising even though you might be bluffing yourself.

Seriously... anyone buy this? Seems to me that the major online tells you can get, mostly apply to the individual or the gameplay itself, rather than some universal online tells, with the exception of the multi-table playing tells you get from people like the auto-check.

I could just see folding my high pair to a weak bet because he took forever to bet, when the only reason he took so long was because he was on dialup or had to use the bathroom. Rolling Eyes

Nah, I don't buy it. Simple lag may cause pauses in the game as well, or it may cause your opponent to act quickly because you lagged.

I think it is better just to pay attention to how people play, alot of people fail to mix up their play online.

Crapola. Is he forgetting the regular check in turn button? I think there is too much varience in play to use any of these as tells. Very very limited use information at best.

There is some truth in these two - especially the last.

Rigid rules and poker :

Rather than saying “tell X means hand Y” it might be better just to list all the tells and suggest the player decide what they mean from the information provided during the game.

geez I disagree with practically all of it

I agree with some of it because I am guilty of some.

"The instant check: A player sitting in late position who uses the "in turn" check/fold button is usually weak. Often, they are playing at multiple tables and are hoping to save time by using the "in turn" buttons. "

That is me. If I dont have a hand and im playing multi tables ill simply use the check button because im ready for a free flop or ready to fold.

"The delayed check"

I agree that this is a sign of weakness however strong players can use this to seem weak. Have you ever notcied how if you bet or reraise someone they will pretend to think it over and then fold. Happens all the time.

I do this, and know quite a few people who do it also, I usually have a set amount of time before I make any action. And, I never use the buttons with the exception of the "fold" button and that's just out of courtesy for the other players. There is no set of rules for how people play. To me, that list is just silly.

Imajica1975 i believe #3 in your list might have some drwbacks. If a player acts right after the flop hits the table or any card after the flop he has usually determined in his mind that he likes his hand already and has decided to bet no matter what card comes out because of the strength of his hand. Don't get me wrong a bluffing player can do this as well but usually this means strength when the flop, turn or river comes.

I don't know if anyone will read this but I just wanted to comment on the idea of tells in general. No tell in a live or on-line game is universal. Anybody could be trying to use reverse psychology at any point. This being said, awareness of the possility of a tell is key. If I am on-line and I notice that this guys pauses before making a bet and then there is a show down - that pause and its meaning for that hand gets filed away as another piece of information. If the same player repeatedly does the same thing, then this potential on-line tell has become a real tell for that player, who happens to be playing on-line.

In addition, awareness of these possible on line tells are important because you may be portrayed as having the tell by someone else who thinks this way. That could be used to your advantage.

Though I wouldn't live by this guide, once in a while I've picked up on a tell or two simliar to these on an individual player. Of course, it all varies and this will be alot more helpful in low stakes and I would have to have closely observed a player before I make any kind of move based on an "online tell".

EDIT:
Here's an example:

The guy took a really long time to make that last bet./b
