How much to sit down with?

Posted Tue Feb 03, 2004 9:33 pm GMT by JohnnyCache
How much do you need as a stake for a given table? I seem to do OK with about 100 times the minimum . . . IE 5.00 for a .5/.10 table, etc . . . how does that hold up?

that would be $25 for 50 x .5. But thats kinda what i go by, Depending on the limit. 1-3 i buy in for $50. 3/6 i buy in for 80-150.......

You can always buy more you just want to have enough to cover that great hand when you got it.

Sorry, I meant a .05/.10 game . . . typo.

A safe rule is to buy into a limit game for 50 times the small bet. So in a $5/$10 game, $250.

If you're playing no limit, always buy in for the max allowed.

One word of advice i can give is do not set down at a table where everyone has a lot more money then you. You will just get pushed around.

Yeah, I've seen that happen . . . I'm more asking to figure out where to set the buy-ins for my table game so we get a good long game, but money changes hand, and we can all afford to play.

I like to sit down at a table with many tall stacks in NL. I find that they're much looser which means more money in each pot for me to take. In limit, there really isn't much pushing that can be done. Just my personal preferences here. I don't play limit much (not at all really) I prefer to take the bigger pots in NL.

I agree I play a lot of 3/6 and will by in for 80 with another 80 to back it up. Setup stop losses for yourself as well, if you go down 79 and swing back to 80. Pat yourself on the back for breaking even and go home, also realize when you are rushing watch it to plateu and walk.

I started to set these "rules" for myself and have been very succesful this year in 3/6 games. I am a sporadic player so I dont have the bank roll usualy to go in to "high limit" games. However making 200+ on 3/6 in a few hours doesnt suck.

I've heard this before, but don't understand the logic behind it, although I'm sure there is some. Could someone explain it please? Thanks.

There is nothing worse than having the nuts and not taking full advantage. $100 buy in, you buy in for 50 and flop the nut flush and someone goes all in, you only in $50 instead of getting full value. Or, say you put someone on a drawing hand and you have a set, you push all in but dont have enough to push them off the pot (AA verse Js10s flop As10d2s start w/ $25 raise 5 preflop 5 callers). You can only bet $20 toward a $30+ pot. No way to protect your hand against draws.

I agree with Dave on this. The last time I sat down at no-limit I only bought in for $200 when the max was $300. However, I had scanned the tables prior to buying in to see how much the other players at the tables had (there were only 3 NL tables) and $200 seemed to cover all but one player. If the other players had the max or more, I'd have bought in for that amount.
