Playing at a casino

Posted Fri May 20, 2005 12:55 pm GMT by JohnD23
I apologize for the stupid question but just want to have an idea of what I need to do the first time I go to play poker in a casino. I know I have to sign in at the front desk and I assume I need to buy chips before going to the table? I just dont want to go there looking like an idiot... thanks

You will look like an idiot. Be prepared for it. Where are you going? Some places run a little different than others.

The bets thing to do is watch what others do. Especially if you can keep an eye on a regular.

The nice thing about the internet is that you can not assume that someone is a poor player, just because they dont have the casino game's etiquette down.

sorry about that, meant to include that. It will be in AC most likely either the trop or borgata.

watch and copy what others do.

(1) sign up at the board for preferred limit. If the line's long, i just like to go sweat the high-limit area.

(2) when they call your name, just let them you're there, and then find out which table you'll be at.

(3) you can either buy your chips before hand or at a low-limit table, you can buy them from the dealer.

(4) they'll ask you if you want to post (limit hold'em) and you can decide then if you want to post big blind and be dealt a hand, or you can sit back and wait until the big blind comes around to you. Do as you please.

(5) People might straddle: that's when the player next to the big blind (under-the-gun) puts in a forced bet that's double the amount of the big blind. That means if you want to make a call preflop, the forced bet is now 2 big blinds instead of one.

(6) just enjoy yourself and let the bad beats roll off of you. You'll be going back a lot more.

exactly what I wanted to know. Thanks a lot.

Live is a different game.. it's much slower. Sit back and enjoy it but be prepared to be patient... you'll get about 2/3rds as many hands in per hour as online.

Pointers:
• Be nice to people around you... if the table gets uptight there will be no action. No action = No money to be made.

• ALWAYS remember to tip... if you're playing 2/4 or higher I'd tip $1 on every pot where you see a turn or river. It will seem like a lot on the small pots, but it goes a long way in keeping the dealers happy. Happy dealers = fun game.

• Don't bring sunglasses or anything else that will attract attention to yourself

• Don't be afraid to get up and leave your chips there... they will watch them.

• If you have to get up to go to the bathroom or take a break, do it before you're in the blinds... if you miss a blind you have to pay a dead fee ($2 + $1 dead fee at 2/4). You also have the option of waiting for the blinds to come back around.

• I'd buy in at the cage unless the place has chip runners. If someone runs you your chips tip them a buck as well.

• Have fun... don't sweat the money too much... just enjoy yourself...be patient. Don't be afraid to ask about food/beverage comps....

Hrms.. I'm underage for another couple weeks as well, so I was wondering about these "food/beverage" comps. What exactly are they/how should I phrase my requests? Should I only be doing this if I'm doing decently at the table/being the big-bet type of guy and bringing them more rakes? Who would I ask? The pit boss? Dealer?

Thanks =)

I played in my first casino poker in Niagra Falls last weekend. I'm not sure how it is everywhere else, but the waitresses just asked if you wanted anything to drink and got it for you. The drinks were free for everyone (and I was at a 3/6 table), of course you'd have to be an ass of sorts to not tip them.

I too would be interested in how one goes about getting meals or possibly (correct me if I'm crazy) rooms comped.

yes, also, are tips in chips customary for service people/runners?
or should i whip out a stack of toonies? lol

Chips are fine and usually preferred... easier to handle, they just toss em in a cup on their tray. Additionally, you can't be afraid to ask for comps. Some places comp you a meal after a certain time playing. I ask every time I go to the casino. "Hey you got any rooms?" "What are you giving away tonight?" Etc. Ask the floor or someone else looking somewhat important (suit). The waitress can't give you a room. Smile You aren't being cheap or out of line asking for stuff. They comp for a reason. And it works. When I am at Turningstone if I can get a room for free or even greatly discounted, they keep me for another night. Smile

Correction to one of the above posts:

In AC, no casino let's you do a live straddle.

A few casino's make you post even in NL games.

I know at the Mirage in LV, you can get a poker room rate on your room (needs to be arranged through the poker room before you go). You must play 8 hours per day during the weekend and 4-6 per day during the week. Just call the main reservation number and ask for the poker room rate. I assume other casinos do the same.

I wouldn't play at either one of those Casino's................try the Taj Mahal. The Borgata sucks ass and has a tiny poker room. The Taj is full of fish.
