On Sat. I went to the Winstar casino in Oklahoma. Just an hour north of Dallas. Anyway, I played in a 2/5 NL cash game. Everyone bought in for about $400. I get Big Slick one hand and raised the pot $15. I wanted to get a lot in the pot and take it down later. Got lot of callers. The flop comes A/7/4. Don't remember the suits, but they didn't matter. I bet about $20 after the flop and a lot of people fold. The guy to my right ends up floping top two pair, Ace's and sevens. I end up losing a lot of money on this hand b/c of that. Should I have raised about $50 before the flop to get this guy out before he had a chance to get lucky? What do you guys think? Give me your opinions. I didn't want to bet that much in fear of casing everyone out and just picking up the blinds.

3xBB is not much of a raise. Flopping top pair top kicker is nice, but not a huge hand. If you bet 2/3 to pot on the flop and still get called, then you have to be prepared to let the hand go.
Betting $20 on the flop toward a $100+ pot doesnt give you much info.

Under most circumstances, I tend to go with a minimum 4xBB preflop raise, sometimes a 5x if in early position, with AK. I only want one caller, max, and am happy if I do just take the blinds with it. It's a good hand, no doubt, but one to easily get into trouble with.
And, what Dave B said re your bet on the flop. Way to small a bet. I'd go 1/3 pot with it just to get some information. You can't give marginal hands pot odds to call.

I would personally be raising big slick off 3-4xBB and big slick suited 3-5xBB depending on the table/position. I mix that up but as a general rule 3xBB really is the recommended minimum I would say

I think that you have to get a feel for the table in order to size your raise - just using a rule of thumb like 3xBB or 5xBB sometimes gets you into trouble. If the buyins are big compared to the blinds, it might take a raise like 10xBB to avoid a bunch of callers. It just depends on the table - you need to see what kind of raise seems to get respect.

It's also a good idea to re-raise with it, if you're up against AA or KK you better find out quickly.

Sometimes even experinced players gamble a bit. A,7 is NOT a caling hand unless you are on or near the button and no one has raised. I would think long and hard about calling a 2x raise with A,7 even on the button.
I would say this was more likely a case of a poor player getting lucky. Unless you did something earlier to cause him to have no respect for your raise. Some people actually believe that an Ace is an Ace.
