Straddle Vs. BLind RAISE

Posted Mon May 23, 2005 2:55 pm GMT by neurotic
It seems when it comes to casino poker, its up to the dealer weather you can straddle or not....

I am playing a decent 5-10 game limit holdem... i'm attempt to straddle the big bling (giving me option to raise once round.).. no one at the table complains and neither does the dealer.. i'm hitting a winning streak.. everytime i straddle i get the nut cards.. so it was all workin out for me deadly..

then a new dealer comes and sits down.. i straddle the bigblind again.. and the dealer says.. "no straddling" .. confused.. i questioned and he just responded "no straddling" .. i was thinking.. O.K.. so then i said BLIND RAISE (which is legal, because you dont get the option once round.).. and he says again.. ."No straddling" .. then i say "i'm not straddling i'm BLIND RAISING.. " he says again "no straddling" i was liek WTF .. everyone at the table was lookin at the dealer like he was an idiot.. a BLIND RAISE is a BLIND RAISE.. so i took back my blind raise.. waited for the chips to go round the able and RAISED (without looking at my cards.. ) .. and said out loud.. raising blind.. and everyone at the table chuckled..

it was quite amusing.. that the dealer didn't know the difference from a straddle or a blind raise..

i guess what i'm getting at.. is it up to the casino, if everyone at the table is agreeing to a straddle rule? .. they get their rake no matter what?

If you had already done it at that casino in the same evening I would have asked for a floor manager.

Where was this?

1st of all, heater or not, straddling is foolish. I have done it plenty, but understood that I was being foolish. It sounds like you were justified in your silliness.

2nd, if I want to straddle I am going to straddle. I refuse to settle for a blind raise. If the dealer is right or wrong, I want to know about it so they are forced into some consistancy. I hate it when each dealer has their own rules.

i tottally agree straddling is foolish.. but given the time and the place.. all the players at the table were having a good time.. playing strong.. and we wanted to see some pots in the limit cash game.. so.. straddling was the alternative.. plus i was getting sexy cards all night..

but yeah i agree. i hate when dealers have their own rules.. there should definatly be some consistancy..

Just a quick heads-up. You might want to remove that link from your sig before a mod sees it.

there is a huge influx of poker players in cardrooms and thus a huge demand for english-speaking dealers.

These dealers do not play poker, have never spent more than 10 hours in a poker room before applying for a job, and there training is mostly on the job.

Get used to inconsistencies, misdeals, and general lack of knowledge with casino dealers.

Next time, get the floor.

Or find a place where the dealers know they don't know everything. Where I play, the new dealers realize their limitations and don't mind if the veteran players help them straighten out a point of discontent.

The floor is always a good option, though.
