Is poker on TV useful for learning the game?

Hey guys, I'm just wondering if it's worthwhile watching games on tv or on the net, or if it's just more worthwhile to read books and play as much as possible.

I'll be the first to say entertainment only, at least the WSOP broadcast is. The boring hands which make up 95% of real poker are edited out.

i agree with u suited aces.. but when it comes to the WPT without question i feel i have become a better no limit hold em player from watching countless hours of poker being played

You can learn alot from watching the tournies on TV....

If you guys ever watched the "Championship poker at the plaza" event....that was great...the blinds at one point were 1000/2000 when the average stack was 150k....

The Turning Stone one was a great one to learn...

For you 2-7 fans...you gotta see the WSOP 2-7 event from last year...it was very educational.

You can learn how the game is played (button movement, betting structure, board dealing).

You can learn some of the thought processes from the commentators that you should be considering during play.

You can learn the strength of different opposing hands from the stats.

Just remember, as suited aces said, it’s only the high lights. You shouldn’t try and learn anything that requires you to have a knowledge of the previous hands (which is most things in poker).

I think you can improve your game sometimes by watching the pros, but poker on TV is very poor for learning the game. If you watched something like WSOP and had never played Poker before, you would think that small pocket pairs win every hand, someone goes all-in on every hand, and that AK, QQ, and the like are dealt on nearly every hand. As suitedaces said, they edit out a lot of the "boring" hands and blind- and ante-steals, which are especially important late in the tournament.

The most useful thing would probably be the commentary (when it is knowledgable) and the statistics for the various hands, which can help you play your hands for better value.

You can learn how to have a personal see-flop % of 70 or 80, which should make everyone you play against very happy.

Honestly, the best and most educational poker to watch is Live At The Bike on thebike.com. They run different limits nightly and its great to see player's chip stacks gradually increase and decrease over time rather than WPT's coverage of a 6 handed table edited to 2 hours of footage and the first player getting busted out within 10 minutes.
