8/16, fairly loose game, I am up $100 or so, but bouncing from even to up $100. Table has several real, I mean REAL, idiots and some very solid players (regulars). Idiots are winning nearly every hand. The guy to my left was the losing idiot, he would call any preflop raise w/ any suited or connected hand, then bitch when he missed his runner runner every time, he dropped at least $1k in 5 hours.
Anyway, I get AQ in mid position and raise, 2 limpers before me, all fold (I was one of only 2 players getting respect on raises), big blind calls.
Flop K 10 x, rainbow. Checked to me, I bet, hoping to take the pot down now, blind calls, UTG check raises, other calls, I call-still decent pot odds for one small bet w/ 4 way actions.
Turn J BINGO, I have the NUTS!!!!!!!! Praying for action. UTG bets, next player raises....hmmmm, Henry, very good Asian player-one of the only ones were I respect his bets, maybe KJ KK JJ or AQ too. But heck, I still have the nuts, so I 3 bet. BB folds, UTG calls without hestitation. Henry looks at me like "you have me you SOB!" which was reassuring, no AQ from him, I now have a huge pot. He calls one bet.
River 10. *&^&$@%&$*&(^$#@#@% SON OF A......
UTG bets, Henry folds, I call knowing I just got rivered. UTG shows K10, Henry had KJ.
Now, here is what gets me......he says, "I couldnt lay that down, sorry". I say "well, you should have". This ticks him off. He says "how can I lay that down?" I say-2 of the tightest players at the table raise and reraise you, didnt you feel that you were behind? How many outs did you think you had, I clearly wouldnt 3 bet w/out a set or the nuts, so you were either drawing dead or had 2 outs". He says, "well, I like to gamble".
I dont mind losing, I hate losing to morons that dont even understand HOW lucky they really were. $350 pot down the pisser.
BTW-this SAME guy pulled a bone head to end all boneheads. Some guy from the 9 seat raises, one seat calls (other side of the dealer) all others fold. 9 seat doesnt see any callers so he shows AA. OOPS. So, flop KQx, AA now exposed face up on the table bets, other calls. LOL this is getting funny. Turn rag, exposed AA bets, idiot calls. River J, AA finally checks, "I like to gamble" idiot bets. AA calls. Idiot shows 9 10 for river str8. Everyone just shakes head. AA asked how he can call down w/ no overcards and just a gutshot-he says "On principal".

Rough night :x
How common is it to have so many obvious fish at the table at these limits? It sounds potentially very profitable.

Very common.
Lots of deep pockets w/ free money. No different than Vegas. 8/16 is an action game out there and frequently gets tables w/ bigger pots than 15/30.

Sounds nice.. As long as you have the bankroll to handle the swings.

Dave, just curious, what's softer on average the low limit on party (2/4 or less) or 8/16 at your cardroom? And does your cardroom let you play 3 tables at once in your underwear?

the 8/16 game is tough. Lots of very good players, just a few complete idiots.
This makes it very hard to consistantly win, but swings are large and winning $1500 isnt unusual. I have done it 3 times in the last 9 months playing once a week for 6 hours max-not including the jackpot.
It is one of those games where morons get lucky just enough to justify playing poorly and payoffs are huge when you hit.

I live all of about 5 minutes from Canterbury, I should probably go play there sometime. :D
I actually went once over a year ago when I didn't really have any idea what I'm doing. I should probably go once to gear up for my Vegas trip this summer.
So Dave - come pick me up next time.
