Check-raise?

Posted Fri Feb 06, 2004 1:46 pm GMT by Wada
Can someone explain to me what Check-raising means?

Im going to take an estimated guess at what it means - does check raising mean that you check, someone after you ends up raising, abd then betting round comes back to you - you end up raising as well?

Thanks

Right. It's when you check expecting someone else to bet so you can raise that bet. It's usually done to get more money in the pot when you have a good hand.

Or, to represent a good hand. I would never, ever do that, but I've heard of it...

I hear some people say its unethical???
But then again when it comes to winning money and using strategies anything should be used for the advantaged except cheating.

Everyone has to define their own ethics.

Deception is an integral part of successful poker. Whether it's representing a hand you don't have by bluffing, or underplaying a very strong hand, or check-raising, if you're not being deceptive once in a while, you'll eventually get cleaned.

It is an entirely legal play, but some people prefer to disallow it. One of those things that should be discussed and understood as part of the basic rules if you have a regular home game.

People who say it is unethical dont understand poker.

As far as using a check raise to represent a good hand. This works! The higher up you go the better it works. 3/6 and under-forget it. 5/10 sometimes, 10/20 often.

Here is when I use it, decent size pot w/ multiple callers to start. Flop has a flush draw. Hopefully 2-3 fold after the flop. If the 3rd suited card hits on the turn then check raise. If they dont fold, you HAVE to fire another shot at the river. This doesnt work as well to check raise the river, because they only have 1 bet to call. If you check raise the the turn, they know that they will need to call 2 bets to see your cards.

That reminds me of this mean, yet profitable move. It is effective if you really want to keep players on their toes or just abuse them. You have the nut flush draw after the flop. You catch your flush on the turn and check raise. 4th suited card hits on the river and check the bet. This makes them question whether you ever had a flush-maybe you had 2 pair or a set. Now if they have a flush (which is likely if they are still hanging in there) they will likely bet and you can check raise them again. I would say that about 70% of the time they will bet, either w/ a hand of trying to show the flush.
