EV?

Posted Thu Jun 02, 2005 1:04 pm GMT by p3nguin
Can anyone point out a resource that goes into detail about EV?

I have read what is at this site, and I still am kinda fuzzy about it. I mean I think I get it... but another take on it would be helpful.

Thanks!

if you raise the flop with a four flush your only losing 34 cents per dollar of EV

EV is expected value as you already know. To explain the above qoute:
Let's say you flop a four flush, a player bets into you and you raise $1. Everyone folds to the bettor who calls. You've now invested $1. You have about a .33 chance of hitting your flush, in which case you will get back $2 as a result of your investment. You have about a .67 chance of not hitting your flush in which case you will lose $1. So your $1 investment will get you a .33 chance at $2

Ev = -$1+.33*$2 = -$.34

Now lets say five players behind you all call the raise aswell as the original bettor. Again you're investing $1, which you have a .67 chance of losing. You still have .33 chance of winning however now you'll win $7 instead of $2.

EV = -$1+.33*$7 = +$1.31

Anytime you have higher pot equity than your average caller you stand to gain EV. Of course there are many factors in determining what to do other than EV.

Read Sklansky's The Theory of Poker for a very detailed explanation of EV and other VERY important gambling and Poker concepts.

By the way, this all assume that if you make your hand it wins and someone doesn't pull of a higher flush or something Laughing

Or as will happen much of the time, you get bet off the draw by a decent player in NL/PL who puts you on a flush draw. Limit I guess you run the risk and play it that way. About your percentages for the draw. You are about 33% chance to hit over both turn and river. Not on each card. This should impact your decision depending on pot size of course.

You're best bet would be to download secret system by Bill Fillmaff. In chapter 4, he talks about how folding KK headsup with a raise is +EV.

Seriously though, this site, http://www.pokerroom.com/main/page/games/evstats/expValue, is good.
