My Phil Hellmuth book came last night.

I left it at work today though. Sad

I have only read a tiny little bit but it has helped me already.. Using those top ten hands... plus a little bit of careful thinking about any other hands is working out not too bad.

Does studying books really help?? Hmmm.. Obviously it does I just cant work out how all of this information is going to fit in my brain.

I really really want to be successful at poker one day.. suppose its just going to take time isnt it... ??

Bit of a waffly post but whatever.. just feel I am now taking my novice poker game a bit further now and feel like mentioning that.

Good evening all!

Experience, experience, experience.
Oh yeah, and it doesn't hurt to be able to do math and have a good eye for physical tells (in live play of course).

If I were you, I would buy The Theory of Poker by Sklansky instead of Super System I, if you don't have ToP already. Super System 2 is a lot more relevant to today's Poker Culture--SS1, while still good, is not as full of information as its sequel.

What game do you play?

i read phil's book awhile back, and was very disastisfied with it. Although it does break down a pretty good system for begginingers and will help you out if your just getting into poker, there are MANY better books out there.

As well you should... it's probably the best book on overall Poker strategy written to date--you may already know a lot about the tactics contained therein, but it will make you look at some plays an entirely new way.

Not that I am doubting the skill of the great Phil Hellmuth but I think it's unreasonable to ask players to sit around for AA-88, AKs, AQs, and AK. Would work a little better in NL, and is a great strategy for playing early in tourneys, but not so much a good low limit strategy IMHO.

If you wait around for those hands you're going to be waiting a while AND there's no gaurentee that your 88 is going to be good and it probably won't if the flop misses you. Even with AA there's no gaurentee you're one pair is good.

My best advice is to learn Sklansky's hand classification. Then you have the ability to adjust your play for position, table dynamics, limits, etc. instead of just an overarching strategy.
