.. in fact first live game i have ever played in. is happening on sunday.

its a mtt, will prob have about 60 - 90 players. £5 buy in and re-buys in the first two hours.

i am really nervous.

can anyone give me any tips at all? basic strategy.. etiquette... anything really.

i have never even been in a casino in my life and have only ever played poker online.

heard there are going to be loads of good opportunities to knock people out early on.. with just people playing that are doing it for a laugh.. and loads of people calling and raising with rubbish (or any) hands.

cant wait actually...

Where are you playing? In the UK? PL tourneys are the most common format here.
NB: UK casinos require you to be a member 24 hours before you’re allowed on the gaming floor, unless you have a friend with you who can sign you in.

Do you normally play PL or NL? The differences can be significant, especially when you’re in early position.

Most tourneys have a 1 hour re-buy period at the start so don’t expect the numbers to drop until after then. Before the freezeout people will play anything trying to double up, they don’t care because they can just reload, I’ve seen people rebuy 10 or 12 times at £5 tourneys because the stakes are just so damn low to them. This is a good time to pick up some easy chips I find.

After the freezeout people change gear so don’t call expecting people to turn over garbage anymore, now they know they can get knocked.

Anyway I’m sure you’ll have a great time, the atmosphere of a casino is something else. It’s like the difference between playing Counter Strike on-line and actually storming the Iranian embassy with the SAS Smile

Think ahead. It's really important in any game, but in PL it's even moreso.

The important part: etiquette and live tips and all.

Just relax, and be consistent. If you've never played live before, you're going to give a lot away. Granted, this is a cheapo tournament, so most people aren't going to care, but I'm sure there will be some halfway decent players. If you just make a conscious effort to make your actions uniform, you'll probably do more than well enough as far as avoiding giving things away. For instance, if you make the routine to say "Bet" or "raise" whenever the action is on you, count the chips, and then place them in front of you in the same way... that kind of thing. Even a drunk moron will get suspicious when that flush card comes on the river, and you shrug your shoulders and say "well... I have to raise, I guess..."

As for etiquette: I'm pretty sure this stuff is universal, but I don't know, if it's different in the UK, well.. blimey.

Important things to consider: Pay attention to the action and try to act very promptly when it's your turn. Place chips in front of you, NOT IN THE POT. This is another important one. If you're making a bet, count it out and place it in front of you. If you want to bet $250, and you only have black chips, say "Two-fifty" or "two-hundred fifty" and place three black ($100) chips in front of you, and then HANDS OFF. The dealer will handle the change.

Likewise, if somebody bets $200, and you want to make it $1000, don't just put a $1000 chip in front of you. That counts as a CALL.

If you say "raise" and then put it in, THEN you raise. If you just throw a chip in the middle that is larger than the bet, it's considered a call.

Basically, the rule of thumb is to say exactly what you intend to do, before you do it. That way if you screw up, the dealer will help you make it right. If you don't say it, your screw-up stands. Also, be careful with your cards. Look carefully, without letting others see them (this is surprisingly harder than you might think. Years ago I used to play homegames all the time and I was fine, but when I got into a casino type atmosphere, the chairs were so close together that I had to check my holecards in a different way or risk the players to my sides seeing them.) Also, if you are in the hand, put something on your cards. A single chip will do: just do this so the dealer and all the players know that you're in the hand. If the dealer grabs your cards accidentally, your hand is dead, and there ain't a damn thing you can do about it.

It's a tiny stakes re-buy tournament, so prepare to see a lot of people gambling it up and rebuying alot. Likewise, be prepared to rebuy a few times yourself, or be fine with the fact that you might lose to one of the gamboooolers. During the early stages of a rebuy tourney you tend to have to play for your whole stack a lot more often than in a freezeout.

Most of all, good luck, and have fun.

Snoogins made good points as always however I should point out that every tournament I’ve been too (£5-£50) has been self dealt until the final table. So don’t expect the current dealer at the table to know anything about poker.
There’s a lot of tolerance at theses stakes and other player will usually help out with anything you’re unsure about, most tables have at least one or two experienced players on them.

Which reminds me, dealing normally goes:

Guy on your left shuffles.
Guy on your right cuts.
You deal.

In some tournaments you both shuffle and deal but you always pass the deck to the guy on your right to cut the cards before you deal the player hands.
Also don’t forget to burn cards etc.
