What would be a good book for a relative beginner?

When I say beginner, I mean REAL beginner.

I know some things, like hand selection before the flop (what to fold, what to hold.) After the flop, I am not so great. I'm not a great at making decisions after the flop comes out (specifically in certain situations like when you hit low pair or medium pair.) I know pot odds and out odds, but I haven't been able to win very much. Last night I was the 5th place loser at a table of 6.

I'm most interested in Low-limit games. I play a bit online and would like to get better there too. I'm pretty concerned about playing home games though. I'm not very good, and I want to beat some of my friends.

Winning Low-Limit Hold'Em by Lee Jones seems to be highly recommended. But how about Get the Edge at Low Limit Texas Hold'Em by Bill Burton? That looks decent too. And another book, Playing Low-Limit Hold'Em the 20-4-50 Way by Bob Turgeon looks interesting. It claims to have you play more hands and therefore win more.

Anyone recommend a certain book, even ones not on this list? I can get the books by Burton and Turgeon for $20 together, I thought that would be a pretty good deal.

I've been reading Ken Warren Teaches Texas Hold 'Em and it's helped me already (been playing about 6 months). Covers a wide variety of topics such as hand rankings, odds, reading tells, bluffing, etc. Probably not much here for more advanced players, but this book will almost certainly help with a few aspects of your game.

Yes, you are correct, Lee Jones' book is highly recommended as well as Phil Hellmuth's book, "Play Like The Pros"...

I would get these two books...

Doyle Brunson's Super System
by: Doyle Brunson

and

Hold'Em Poker for Advanced Players
by: David Sklansky, Mason Malmuth

I haven't found too many books that cover the basics like these do.

I actually think Texas Hold'em for advanced players and supersystem are not begginers books. They focus on no limit/ higher limit games and arent great for begginners. I'd reccomend Lee Jone's book and once you've read that get Sklanksy's, Brunson's and Caro's.

I've heard some bad things about Phil Helmuth's book and some bad things about his ring game play. I'd avoid that one : )

Hey thanks for all the recommendations. My girlfriend actually got me Winner's Guides to Texas Hold'Em Poker by Ken Warren for Valentine's day. I was really surprised because she had no idea I wanted a book, but I'm really glad she got it for me. It's pretty informative. I'm just about to get into the bread and butter of the book, all the important information about pre-flop, flop, turn, and river play.

Me and my buddies had a little poker tournament last night. We played no-limit just for the hell of it and it turned out to be very fun. We didn't play for real money, just for bragging rights. Well, I ended up with the big stack at the end of it. I had big slick and I was going heads up against my friend John. He decided not to look at his cards and just play blindly. Well, I ended up with a full boat (kings over jacks) and I went all-in. He called me and I doubled up. I wish I could've won more fairly, because he totally gave up on that hand.

I think next I'll move onto Super Systems.

yea i agree that the super system is not for beginners. brunson preaches agressiveness and striking fear into the opponent and i dont think a beginner is in the same line of thinking of brunson. i mean most of us aren't but i dont think its an easy concept to understand brunson's agressiveness. so yea the lee jones book and hold em poker by sklansky is a good book to start out with. once u read those then the hold em poker for advanced players and then the super system. and you cant forget about the book of tells.
