When is kicker used instead of a split pot?

Posted Sat Feb 07, 2004 4:17 pm GMT by 3Redheads
I've never figured this out. When is a kicker used and when is the pot split?

Someone told me that if less than 4 of the community cards are used to make a hand, it goes to the kicker.

Community cards:
K 9 A 6 J

If remaining players have aces, with player A having 10 kicker and player B having 5 kicker, who wins? Player A?

Would this pot be split?

Community cards:

A K J Q 3

Both players have ace, would it be split or go to highest kicker in player's hand? Since they're using 4 of the community cards, it would be split?

Is this theory correct? If not, what's an easy way of describing it?

Thanks!

OK, in poker u ALWAYS play the FIVE strongest cards in your hand. If the five strongest of 2 (or more) players are the same, it is a split pot. If not, it goes to kickers. Using your example:

Player A wins bcos his best five cards are: A,A,K,J,10

Player B has: A,A,K,J,9 which is not as good.

If the players held A,4 and A,2, it would be split bcos both players' best 5 cards are A,A,K,J,9 again. The 4 and 2 are both lower than the 9 on the board so their 2nd cards are totally inconsequential.

It is ALWAYS the best FIVE cards of the SEVEN available to each player.

Let me know if that does not clear it up.

I hate this guy's anti-female statement. It should be taken down. If he is a loser at life, he should keep it to himself. :x

ahh... i didn't even know what was going on there. LOL. it's the sig that's the issue.

ya... that's from Rounders. kewl movie.

I saw Rounders & liked it. I just don't like Geno taking that anti-female quote and making it part of his signature. It's not a great line --it's a sexist line and the game is sexist enough as it is. He should remove it.

Easy there darlin, don't get your panties in a bunch. I don't think he meant any disrespect to you or any other chick with his sig.

....must be that time of the month... Wink

Fantastic!! Started out as a discussion on how the best 5 cards are used and when pots are split and when they aren't - a thread we must have all read a thousand times in different places - and then degenerated into a discussion on sexism. Great stuff!! Better than that, the supposed sexist is the moderator of the forum. Brilliant, just brilliant.

Getting back to the original post, I feel I ought to point out that in the second example of the original post that Player A actually has a straight, ace high, whilst player B has a pair of aces. Player A therfore wins and it was not a great example of when kickers count. Had player A been holding A9 against, say, A2 (or A4 - A8) then it would have been split.

Sorry, not sure how the smily face got in my post, it should have said:

Had player A been holding A9 against, say, A2 (or A4 - A8) then it would have been split./quote

OK, now I understand - 8 followed by ")" gets converted to 8).

Thought I was going mad.
