1st time in a casino poker room next weekend!!!

Posted Tue Feb 10, 2004 3:47 pm GMT by american mutt
It's about damn time. Going to Hollywood casino in bossier
city, LA. Anyone ever been? I'm hoping someone can give
me advice on how others may be working together to take
my hard-earned money. My paranoid friend is telling me to
not go to a casino poker room, I laughed. What are some
things to look for besides obvious things, or any other tips
anyone has. I'm a good player, so I think I may have a good
chance, but since theres a few hundred poker players here,
maybe someone can help give me an edge!!! thanks

I appreciate that, I'll just use common sense too.
Are the reservation casino you go to on water?
The thing down here, is any table games have to
be on a boat. Reservation casinos around here
only have slots and bingo.

remember... the one thing about the indian casinos is that they aren't goverened by a major and known gaming commission. okay... maybe it's major, i don't know... but well known... i would say they're not.

in NV, you have the NV Gaming commission... i'm sure other states have the same thing. these state agencies, garner my trust a lot more than whatever indian gaming commission is regulating the indian casinos (if there even is such a thing).

i don't know... it's just my sense of thing... i never quite feel comfortable in an indian casino. the odds are against you enough in a regular casino... the indian casinos just compound that sense for me.

i don't think i'd play any real serious poker in an indian casino.

jmho though.

Right, I've never known any big, or any winners at
a reservation casino. I guess the ones around here
just choose not to have table games, I don't know
if the state's laws apply on a reservation, I know
federal, but I don't know if it's looked at as it's own
state, federally. Oh well, I don't care either.

no the indian Casino's is not on water.

I trust them the same as any other casino.

Foxwoods is a WPT host not to mention its The Largest Casino in america and the world.

there regulated
state Gaming Authortys regulate Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun the two casino's in CT.

and California Indian Casino's also are regulated.

groton...

in CA... who's the regulating authority? is there some sort of indian gaming commission, or is it a state org that does it? that was my concern...

also... foxwoods is an indian casino? i didn't know that.

How can they cheat in poker? The only things I can think of is stealing extra rake or dealers giving buddies good cards. You see the cards spread out before they deal from a new deck.

I doubt that indian casinos cheat (at least the ones I have been to). But if they did, it wouldnt be on the poker tables. They would have low payout slots, extra face cards in a blackjack shoe and take away aces (but you can watch them set up a new game too and ensure that every cards is present).

I am all for being skeptical, but lets not start conspiracy theories.

my comments were more general regarding the indian casino industry than poker-table specific. my concerns are more around the machines than the tables... because you're right... it would be near impossible for a poker, or blackjack, or whatever, player to cheat at a table game.

i DO have concerns about the machines though... i like to know that there's requirements regarding machine payouts. i don't know anything about any of the indian gaming commisions so, i therefore, avoid the indian casinos in general. i'll only go to one if i'm on vacation or something somplace and just want to kill some time.

don't get me wrong though... no disrespect to the indian casinos intended. i'm just PERSONALLY not particularly inclinced to spend a lot of my time or money in them.

This is all very informative, but,, any tips to playing
at casinos? I'm just as curious about the indian casino
laws as the next guy, but... Smile

watch EVERYTHING at first. Dont talk much, dont ask questions. Even if you have played a lot, people will f* with you if they think you are a rookie. Give yourself at least 4-6 hours at a table. Learn the players, watch who lays down a lot, see who the calling stations are, see who raises aggressively and determine the tight players. Dont act much early, if you are in pots you want a good likelyhood of winning-that will gain the respect of others. Dont play with your chips unless you know how to. Tip the dealer. Try to get a seat that is not next to the dealer. If you are next to the dealers, protect you hand by keeping it tight to the rail or mark the hand w/ a chip on top. Also, the dealer blocks the view or 2-3 players on the opposite side. If you are out on the end, put your bet out far enough so that the dealer can grab it easy. Also, when mucking cards put them in easy reach of the dealer. Once you put your chips out for a raise, you cannot go back to your stack-so grab more than you need and put some back. It is safer to be verbal w/ calls, bets, raises, but if you say the wrong thing, people will pick up on it.

I personally prefer to gamble in a multiplayer poker game cuz u can interact with the players. U don't play with computer generated players which is a good thing cuz u never get cheated Smile U should try Diamond Poker Club cuz itz pretty chill, so far thats the only place I didn't have problems with, but keep in mine that they just launched it this week.

I am far less optomistic about cheating than some others, but maybe it's because I've seen it a lot. The only cheating that is likely to occur in a casino game, though, is collusion. It can't really be proven or prevented. Typically what it involves is two players who agree to work as a team by pooling and splitting their winnings after the game. It used to be quite common and was routinely addressed in poker literature. I'm not convinced it's a great deal less common, but I certainly read very little about it.

Two people in collusion can't really bust you anyway. All they can do is give each other some opportunities for extra bets when they've got a big hand and are confident that one of them is going to take down the pot. Even that can't be done an awful lot without drawing suspicion, since there is a limited number of times in a given game that two people can "trap" a player without raising both eyebrows and hackles.

Don't sweat cheating in a casino. Sweat the fact that people are out there trying to make a living and hoping you are only there trying to have fun.

Thanks man. I'm leaving tomorrow morning. I'll keep an
eye out for any people that seem like they're partnering
up. I know it is bad to point fingers, or accuse anyone, so
I won't stand up on the table and make a fool of myself.
I will be respectful, and wise. I am going to make money,
and if they think I'm just there to have fun, all the better.
It's better to be underestimated than overestimated. Thanks
