I checked other posts about this issue but i am still trying to clarify something for my own knowledge. I understand a straddle is a live bet utg which is 2x the big blind, yet this move may not be legal in all situations..? I know you may also bet in the dark at any time if you are first to act. My question is what are the differences between the two options, and if a casino says you may not straddle, could't you technically just call it raising in the dark and be perfectly legal?
Thank you.

The answer is in your own post.
A straddle is a LIVE bet, like a blind, whereas raising in the dark is not. If you raise in the dark, fine, but you have no option to raise when it trails back around to you.

I never understood why anyone would ask for a straddle... as I understand it you raise before you even get to see your cards.. what's the point there? if you want to put more money in a pot play a higher limit.. it's that easy... hope someone can explain the reason for a straddle...

The reason it is allowed is that it will get the rake up more quickly. As far as a player move, the reason is stupidity.
The only "benefits" are that it allows 5 bets to be the maximum in the first betting round and allows the straddle to act last in this first round of betting, rather than the BB.

The REALLY frustrating thing is when the live straddle keeps picking up their two pair, draws, etc.
Was playing at the Golden Nugget in Vegas last month when some kid and his friend came to the 1/2 table. They both live straddled every time they could.
It was nice, since I had position on them and was able to both make people to my left call three bets cold to come in AND pound at the straddlers post flop when I made my hand. But it did kind of piss me off that'd cash in and pull that crap at a 1/2 table. Playing just to intimidate a bunch of beginners just looking for a cheap fun game...
They ended up getting pissed and left after I took a couple big pots from them. THey wouldn't let me straddle their straddle though... :D

I think I need to switch off from poker for a little bit.
I dreamt last night that I was playing on-line and picked up AJs (the suit was a green maple leaf) on the BB.
UTG straddle raises, folds around to me and I come over the top. He raises back and I call all-in.
He turns over 3 3.
Flop J 3 3
Turn 3
River. Can’t remember.
I was about to complain to the site when I woke up.
I don’t know what this means. Maybe I have an issue with small pocket pairs or I secretly want to buy a 4 colour deck.
