It means the first to act before the flop (the guy to the left of the BB) | scoreyual wrote: | | also, why would u choose to play a hand if ur in a different position?? |
Many reasons. If I have 8 9 and 5 players have limped to me on the button it's a easy call. Because 8 9 plays nicely in multi-way pots. It will not hit as often as hands like A Q but when it does hit it has a very good chance of beating 5 others. As opposed to A Q which will not hold up as frequently when it hits. It's also harder to get called by worse hands post flop so it would be in one's best interest to get more money in preflop by raising with A Q . However, as stated above, 8 9 will not hit very often, so most of the money will be made with it post flop. Because most of the money will be made post flop it's in my best interest to only see a flop if I can see it cheap. And with LP (late position) I'm confident I can get a cheap flop (there are only two players who could raise behind me).
If I was to call with 8 9 from UTG there's a good chance that someone will raise behind me and/or I'll end up in a two or three handed pot. These are situations where I will lose money with 8 9 , so I'd like to avoid them.
Also if I call with it from the button I'll be the last to act every round, this gives me another advantage.

Position play is what has changed me from a losing player to a marginal/winning player (trying to stay honest here). Before, I used to play the same hands, no matter what position on the table. Now I will only play the strongest hands UTG and EP and gradually loosen up as I get into LP.
Understand position, play position, live position.
Oh... but don't forget the cards are kind of important too.
