Depends... there are many types of bluffs and tells. Overbetting the pot is a common one. If 3 spades flop, a big bet is not usually indicative of a flush. Rather, it puts pressure on someone with one spade who wants to draw. If you flop the flush, you're going to want to get some value out of it, so you won't bet big right away.

Bets that are forceful or exaggerated are usually a sign of a weak hand. A very quick call of a bet usually indicates a draw. Players who stare at you while they bet usually don't have much of a hand (the subliminal message is, "don't call me"), whereas players that look down at their chips usually have something good ("I wonder how I can get the rest of these in the pot?"). Betting an amount much lower than the pot is often a sign of trapping, especially from good players.

When a flush draw is on the board, players who look at their hole cards again most often have one, but not two, of that suit. They're double checking to see how high their flush draw is ("was it the 5 or the K that was the spade?").

A smile or a hand over a mouth is usually a sign of a very good hand that players want to exclaim joyfully about. Shaking of the hands is tricky, because it means either a bluff or a very strong hand... need to use some instincts there.

Online, there are a few clues in betting patterns as well. Quick calls are usually draws. When someone checks almost as soon as the action is on them, they often have the "check/fold" box checked and have no hand. Players who take a long time to bet often have a marginal, but not a great hand.

Caro's Book of Tells is a great resource for spotting bluffs/tells.
Careful if you're up against a good player. They'll turn these around on you.
I played in a live freeroll last night. Here are some tells from just one player:
When he hit top pair on the flop, he'd instantly look at his chips and then his hole cards again. If he hit nothing, he'd look at his hole cards again. If he hit second pair or a draw he'd look at his hole cards and then at his chips. When he had a good hand he'd lean back a bit in his seat and look around the table. When he was on a straight bluff, he wouldn't look at his hole cards, he'd sit forward in his seat, his knee would start bouncing and his hand would cover his mouth. When he had a good hand he'd use the higher denomination of chips to bet, but the lower ones when he had second or bottom pair or was on a draw. In one hand I talked to him when I knew he was betting his second pair and his voice cracked when he responded solidifying my read that he was behind in the hand and knew it. When he bet out in early position after the flop or tried to raise out of the big blind, in an attempt to steal, if I stared at him for a second he would squirm. When he had a good hand, he'd ignore me.
Now, these were just tells from one player in the tournament last night and he was an amateur at best. Watch when they show down a few hands and how they acted during the hand and keep that in the back of your mind for future reference. Also, watch betting patterns. For this guy he had the basic weak means strong and vice versa betting strategy. In fact, I think he had more tells than Caro's book.

I always shake like a shitting dog, and everytime I play someone remarks on it "bluffing eh?" or "Nervous?" or "Big hand?"

I always remark "It's because you sit too close" and blow them a kiss Laughing

Somehow I knew I would end up refering players to this site over and over again. In chapter one Bill discusses the basics of looking into another player's soul--and why you need proper UV protection. This will likely allow you to figure out whether or not they're bluffing.

You seldom know if anyone are bluffing. You are guessing, there are different types of playstyles to aid you in the guessing; reads or statistics etc. If you play poker with the same people regularily, clever players will overbet nut hands occasionally and switch playing styles often, so you will have a hard time putting them on a hand on betting pattern alone. That is one of the reasons you mainly play strong starting hands, because you can defend them and stop worrying if you are holding a totally inferior hand.

As for other types of tells, tell listings and things like that will help, but I think simple experience is what helps the most. The more hands and the more players you have played, the more situations and the more playing styles you will recognize at the poker table.

I know a guy who has one of those. The only problem is that he talks a lot at the table about everything and that thing is always on. Laughing

Beerwench, tell me about these Live Freerolls and where/how you get involved in them?

Posted Mon Jul 25, 2005 9:36 am GMT by BeerWench13
They're located in Virginia, and tomorrow is the final opening they have to get into the finals. I know there are some in Florida (both of my sisters live there), but I don't have all of the specifics. One of my sisters is up this week to visit so I'll try to remember to get the info from her tonight and post tomorrow.

My gf has a really funny one.

When the third card to a straight comes, you can literally see her mouthing out 1-2-3-4-5. If she bets after that, I fold faster than a fat man who sat down too fast.
