QQ vs one overcard...

Posted Tue Jun 28, 2005 10:00 am GMT by p3nguin
Limit holdem ring game:

I am sitting in the BB with QQ.
3 call to me.
I raise.
2 call (SB folded).

Flop comes K 4 7 rainbow

I bet he calls

Turn 10

I bet he raises

I should...

Sorry if this is a simple one, just wondering what the "right" move is.

I've seen people do wacky stuff like raise the turn after picking up no more than a straight draw, but that's the only hand you can reasonably expect to beat.

I think he has KT and picked up his 2-pair on the turn. Fold.

I dont think hes got 2 pair. I think hes got something like A10, and thinks you have mid pocket pair like 9's or 8's, and your bet on the flop was trying to protect them. Thats just me though

His 1st call on the flop scares me. You raise out of a blind or UTG and you should get some respect for a strong hand (unless you are a maniac).

So, flop come w/ a K, I still bet to represent AA AK, he doesnt raise, so he either has a monster, a piece, or is looking to steal. Next card comes, you bet, he raises....I think need to fold here.

Think about this, do you want to lay down QQ? I may bet the flop, check the turn, and just call him down. If I lose to Kx, then show the QQ so people will know your raises mean something. You may lose the hand, but make it back on some easy pots later.

By playing it this way, you get to see the river for the same price as if you bet and are raised and fold. By checking the turn and calling, he may still put you on a strong K and check the river-thus getting a showdown for cheap.

One final thought, this isnt always the case, but if he just had 2nd pair and assumed you miss, he may raise you on the flop where it is cheaper. By raising w/ the bigger turn bet, I think that he has something better than QQ.

I would have check/folded on the turn. But I tend to be more conservative. I can be chased out of pots with strong bets unless I think I really have the hand.

I fold this to most players. If not raised it's a check-call on the river.

Yeah, it can be tricky with QQ because while it is a premium hand, the only overcards that can come to it are often in the hands of people who call the pre-flop raise. Use discretion here, but if you really put him on a King (which is very possible with the call on the flop), then you have to fold it, much as it hurts.

Since it is limit, I might call it down.

NL, I probably agree with the above.

If you don't think he has a King or just don't know what he plays, I would call down. But money is money, whether it's limit or No Limit; just because it costs less to see I'm beat doesn't mean I'm willing to do it if I have a read on a guy that tells me I'm beat.
