Bad Move?

Posted Thu Jun 30, 2005 10:20 pm GMT by Keany
Hi, I just got back from a 9 man tourny at a friends house.

After a few hours, it was just left to Me, Eric, and Jay. Now, after a few go arounds, Eric is the chip leader, followed by me, and then Jay.

I would like to know if I played this right.

With the blinds 3,000/1,500 I was delt K 7(maybe? I forgot. Doesn't matter). I was the dealer, so I was the first to act. I called. Jay calls the blind and then Eric checks.

The flop comes 10 10 A (suits don't matter in this hand). It comes to me and I check. Then turn comes an A. Comes to me again and I bet 3000(probably a mistake right here). Jay folds and Eric calls. The turn doesn't matter. Eric checks to me and I go all in. Eric shows me his cards (I think this is bad poker etiquette) and he has a 10. After about 5 minutes, trying to get a read on me (I was listening to music, not paying attention), he calls.

The reason why I thought that all in would work is because I am not known to be a bluffer. So I thought maybe I could steal it.

Now, is that really a bad move on my part? And did I make any major mistakes?

With only 3 people left KT is a raising hand preflop. Since you're in the dealer position and act last on the flop, I'd put out a half pot size bet to make it look like I'm trying to steal. Once that 2nd ace comes I'm scared as hell and wanting to put on the brakes, especially since you haven't made any bets thus far to see what the other guys have.

And if he had a 10 wouldn't you guys have split the pot?

Oh shit, then the 10 wasn't my kicker. Wow, that was dumb of me.

My bad. Must have been a lower card. Because I know it wasn't a face card

In that case, I don't mind trying a bluff, but not an all-in bluff, 1/2-2/3 of the pot will be sufficient. If someone calls or raises you you can be fairly sure he's got something and you can let the hand go.

I agree with Age of Sages, why bet all of your chips when the only hands that could possibly call you have you beat. There are only a few hands that could call you and just about all of them have you beat. Don't risk your whole stack on a flat out bluff.
