You limped w/ QQ, which isnt horrible, then he raises min, I smack him right here and go all in. If he calls and you take a bad beat then so be it.

On the flop w/ a Ace on the board against a preflop raiser, I dont think that it is worth the risk to call down.

I think you had to raise it up nie and high pre-flop to steal the blinds - if you raise high enough i would be surprised if he had called only holding A6s.

But when the flop comes down with an A on it, and he is betting strongly, what did you think he had? You either have to fold top his bet, or raise him again nice and high to make him think you had an A with a better kicker...

Cloutier (and probably every other poker writer too) tells us, when the blinds and antes go up it is worth taking the pot down right then and there.

I think we can safely say that 1/6 of your stack is worth having right there and then.

That notwithstanding, you were in early position, many players will limp with QQ at this point. hoping for a raise further round so that they can reraise or at the least, it calls around and you get to see if any overcards come on the flop. After all, you have QQ, how often do you get big hands like that? you want value for them.

There are arguments for both sides, but i have no fault with your play at this point.

Now, sb minimum raises, (my least favourite play right there Very Mad ) There is now 120,000 in the pot! that is half your stack right there! This is surely enough to take right there, I would want to see an all in from you.

But wait, maybe he has 2 overs, making it at best a cointoss, unlikely but hey, it happens. so ok, you want to play it safe. you call.

Let's see a flop

oh oh! an A on the flop and he raised preflop Confused Not only that but he bets out.

I cannot see any possible reason for you to put any more money into this pot!

But wait, maybe he has an underpair and he's just trying you out?

Well it could be expensive to find out, i certainly would not recommend calling him down to the river, if you still didn't believe he had an A (and i can see no reason why you shouldn't) then calling his bet is not the answer, the only possible way to stop him now is to reraise.

To sum up, and with the benifit of hindsight....

Not reraising his minimum bet preflop was a mistake, not a fatal mistake but a mistake nonetheless.

Continuing to flatcall his bets on flop turn and river when he was betting to you with an overcard on board was not only a mistake, but also a horrible play.

Great breakdown Webby, I should add, sometimes the reraise on the flop will actually scare them enough that they wont fire again.

He was likely just as scared of you having him kicked as you were of him having an Ace. But if he checks, then you will likely bet at him. So his bets were somewhat defensive.

Your opponent played his hand well. Your best option was the limp/raise all-in preflop. There is (almost) nothing scarier than a limp-raise. On the flop with him betting (and you not showing any strength preflop), you were dead and he would have called an all-in push. You didn't want to see a flop with your hand.

Just another slow play gone horribly wrong.

He set you up perfect, you just didn't knock him down. I love the limp from EP and you got just what you wanted, a re-raise. A minimum raise nonetheless. You push all in here. Odds are he tosses his A6 and you pick up a nice big pot.

Just calling, bad. Flop with an A. GET OUT or GO HARD! No calls, either raise all-in or fold.
