Raising as a proportion of stacks rather than BB

Posted Mon Jul 04, 2005 9:51 am GMT by Idaho
Convention says that raises should be proportional to the BB. However when you are playing in the early stages of a single table tourney (online or live) the BB often constitutes less than 5% of anyone's chips. To get value from the rare big pairs early on - surely it is better to raise more proportional to the BB than convention suggests?

Likewise when the blinds are crippling later on the opposite becomes true when a simple raise of the blinds is often enough to trim the field down to the required one or two.

Any thoughts? Am I kicking over well worn round here?

I understand what you mean, I think it just comes down to illustrative purposes.

I think the BB is preferable because it offers an algebraic method of describing how much is in the pot and what would make a good proportional raise depending on the amount of callers you’d like.

I think there are always 3 factors to consider when making a bet in NL:

1. Size of the BB
2. Size of the Pot
3. Amount remaining in your stack and opponents' stacks

Now, later in the tournament, the 3 of these are more closely related, but early on, the initial raise often is related to the BB (4x or 5x the BB early on usually narrows the field). On the flop, the size of the pot is usually the factor to consider since that is what good opponents will gauge their odds on. On the later streets, often you will be firing in bets a significant portion of the opponents' stacks or getting out.

Later in the tournament, you're trying to accumulate BB's to stay alive while you're waiting for a good hand, so the BB is a more appropriate measure. However, when the BB is high, it's often as much as 5% or more of an opponent's stack, and the pot maybe only have 4-5 BB's in it.

Early on with extremely low blinds I tend to raise alot higher. If blinds are 15/30 and I get a premium hand on the button and there are a bunch of limpers, I'm going to raise to about 180/210 in hopes of getting 1 caller, 2 at the most.

Later on in MTTs when the blinds are getting high (600/1200) my raise will depend on what I'm doin. If its a steal from MP with a weaker hand such as AJ, I'll only raise 3x BB. This because if someone re-raises pre-flop I can lay it down without too much lose. With a premium hand it all depends on the table. If I think I'm going to get re-raised, then I'll make a 2 or 3xBB. If not, I'll make it 4 or 5x BB to make it look like a steal.

None of that may make sense.... Later on in tournys there are too many factors to take into consideration. IE: My stack size vs Others Size, My stack vs blind level, position, table image and so on....
