This weekend was my first time ever to a casino and it was an absolute blast. My family went to Niagara Falls for the holiday weekend. My father and I played $2/4 limit on Saturday and Sunday night at Casino Niagara. We initally went to Fallsview Casino, but the lowest stakes they had were $6/12. While I was confident that I would be better than average, I just wasn't willing to risk that much at this given time... someday, maybe soon. Anyway, the first night I was up $15 and the second night I was dominating from the start. Well, initially, I lost a decent amount with trip Ks to a straight. But after that I just started taking in all of these pots to the point where I counted that I was up $120 or so. My father was chuckling at me from across the table because I had this mass of chips with paper currency underneith because players were buying chips off of me at the table because the dealer didn't have enough. However, by the end of the night I managed to be up only $90 as the last few hours I didn't manage to catch any cards, and when I did have a hand the flop was unfavorable. My father, to whom I gave some limit Hold'em advice before we left on the trip, was down $50 Saturday night, but then made $100 on Sunday. Given how unlucky he was on a few hands I told him that it was impressive that he was up $50 overall.
I was astonished as to just how bad the play was at these tables. It resembled $0.5/1 on PartyPoker... just absolutely terrible. One dealer was terrible and I couldn't believe that this sort of mistake happened at a casino... but the important lesson is that dealers are human and they make mistakes so don't count on the dealer to be correct. The hand enevitably showed down and this girl had 44 in the hole and the board was 9 4 9 X X. A guy across the table had K9. Now, as the girl set her hand down on the table, she was unaware she had the full house. She looked in disgust as she thought she was beat. The dealer took her cards into the muck and I said "wait a minute, she had a full house" and everyone at the table started agreeing with me. But the guy with K9 was already grabbing the pot. He also recognized he was beat and handed the pot to her.
This dealer was SO BAD. Besides that hand, she also raked a $6 pot. Some guy was not please to say the least and complained to the pit boss. They corrected the mistake. We were talking to another dealer about the full house incident, and he maintained that if the player doesn't protect their cards and the dealer takes it into the muck and the other player grabs the pot, then they are considered to be out of play and the player who picked up the pot would have the option to give it to its rightful owner or not. This prompted an argument, as some of the guys at the table didn't agree. And my father even chimed in at one point, "You mean to tell me that the casino wouldn't reimburse the player whose cards were mucked for a $30 pot due to a mistake on the dealer's part? I mean, we are talking $2/4 limit here, not a $1000 NL game..." The dealer didn't have anything to say to that. But I know I would be pissed if I put my cards down on the table recognizing that I had the best hand and the dealer mucked me and just because of that I lost the pot. How does that make any sense at all?
Besides these few interesting episodes it was so much fun. At one point I caught myself shuffling chips out of habit, which is something I wanted to avoid doing. But as I was doing it I kind of laughed as I realized I was shuffling over $100 in chips. Sure beats the hell out of home games where I am shuffling $1 in chips... I don't think I will ever be able to take a home game seriously again... :D

Glad you had a great time Ben. Casinos are a lot of fun, and if it weren't so dang convenient, I would never play online.
But seriously, live Poker against a lot of different opponents will improve your game a lot.

Glad it was a good time - once you adapt to the live games and recognize what your live faults may be (eg tells), you'll find that your hours spent online will prove invaluable.
I've met good dealers and bad dealers. While the player needs to protect their cards, it's not as easy when a poor dealer mucks the winning hand. Personally, I don't reliquish my cards until the pot is being slid toward me. And there have been plenty of times when I've "read" the hands for dealers.

I know people make mistakes but if you can't see that flopping 949 holding 44 is a boat, do you even deserve the damn pot?
Glad you had a good time, when you are 21 the options will be even wider :D

I'm glad you had fun. That's what playing the game is all about. Of course winning boatloads of money also helps.
I had a dealer acknowledge that I won the pot and then slide it to my opponent once. We had to recount the bets because that guy who knew he lost just put them into his stack as quickly as possible. SHADY!!
I was getting a beer from the cocktail waitress and turned to see that my pot wasn't in front of me. It was frustrating, but everyone at the table helped out in the recount to make sure that I got my due. Dealers are human, but some of them are just plain awful.
I agree with Geno to some extent too, although I'll say that I want to be sitting at a table with someone who flops a boat and doesn't know it.

there is this 1 guy who i swear is half blind who plays at the trop, he looks alot like a younger phil ivey, 3 big hands he lost cause he mis-read his hole cards. 1 hand he kept betting 15( this is 1/2 nl) flop, turn, river with a few callers thinking he flopped a straight but turned out his 10-9 was actually a 10-8 flop was 6-7-8 forget the turn and river, anther hand he had pocket 4s no 4 on board was betting again, small not big, thinking he hit a set of 4s but it was really a 5, and another hand which was the huge hand, flop comes 8-8-7 1 guy leads out for 25$ next guy raises to 100$ next guy goes all in only had 90$ or so left, then this guy (ivey lookalike) goes all in for lil over 200$ original better folds,(said later he had pocket 6s) next guy who raised to 100 thinks for 5mins, last to act other 2 players both all in, he has about 260 left in front of him he folds 8-j or something face up dont ask me how. other 2 flip A-8 and k-9( he thought he had k-8) he was lucky the guy who went all in infront of him didnt have more money, but this dude must of lost 2-300 or so from mis-reading cards.

The junket is a trip for poker players. For a certain amount per person you get the charter flight and 2 night's stay. You have to log a certain number of hours at the poker table during the weekend to get the rate. It's a great deal especially considering the flight.

i wonder if ive ever played with you at the trop before ,im down there alot went last nite best hand of nite was when i flopped set of 9s, with board q-9-7, another guy flopped a set of 7s nice 500$pot
Posted Wed Aug 17, 2005 8:29 am GMT by BeerWench13
Very nice. I had that happen last time I was there, but I flopped a set of 2's when he flopped his set of 8's. It still turned out well when I caught my quads on the river and took down the $325 or so pot. Phew!
It's possible I've played with you. I generally talk the entire time because I'm there to have fun and win. I also usually get a rep pretty quickly at the table for having a deadly read. Of course they're probably all trying to stroke my ego since I'm a girl, and lull me into thinking I'm better than I am. Either that or they're trying to hit on me.
If I go up again this month, I'll be the one in the "Beer Wench" t-shirt.
