what is with having antes and blinds? why is there only antes when the blinds have increased? are antes payed by everyone?

I believe the antes serve the same purpose as increasing blinds. This doesn't allow people to sit back and wait, while only having to put in chips twice per orbit. I may be wrong, but that's how I understand it.
And yes, everyone has to pay the ante.

In a nutshell:
Blinds - paid by two players only at the table
Antes - paid by ALL players at the table every single hand
It keeps MTTs moving in the latter stages and helps eliminate the smaller stacks near the bubble (provided the tourney structure is not shite).

ok well it just seems weird to me to have antes on top of already HUGE blinds. is this always implemented at casinos and such?

they always do that in big tourneys ... and when you think about it the antes dont add an extreme amount of pressure ... i believe at pstars, blinds go from 150/300 to 150/300 with 25 ante ... at a 9 person table thats 225 more per orbit, which is a sharp increase at the time, but the antes dont go up for a while
