1-2NL live.
Me: $~700ish
Villain: covers me.
Uncreative villain opens for $12 in MP/LP. Terrible button calls. I call w/AK in the SB. Villain rarely opens a pot but this bet looks on the weakish side.
Flop: ($38 ) A 6 3
I check, villain bets $25 assertively, button folds. I min-check raise. (i said raise and grabbed some chips that I thought were green. They were red) So they won't let me go back for more. he calls fast. Hmmm..
Turn: ($88 ) 4
I lead for $70, he makes it $200.
I have the K
what hands do you put villain on? What's your action on the river if it bricks?

Kinda smells like KK and that he thinks you have a weak A. Your mistake on the min check-raise may have cost you alot of chips. If the river bricks I think your only chance for a cheap showdown is to fire out $100 at him. Otherwise, if you check it to him, he is pushing in.
*Can't wait to see how far off I am*

I'm calling it now - the dude has the same hand and you split it after the river is a blank :D

Yeah, my guess is KK or AK as well, and he doesn't want to let another diamond fall.

AA
Kind of a range of hands he can have. AA being the most unlikely as it is the case aces, but I'm sticking to my guess. :D
Some other considerations :
AQ (Q of diamonds).
QQ (Q of diamonds).
QJ of diamonds. Given the late raise, it is a possibility.
66, 33 - Also possibilities given the late raise. If this is what he does have, I like the $25 bet on the flop. If you have a big Ace, he could expect a raise to protect against the possible flush draw.
AK with no diamonds - Not sure about that one. Definite possiblility, but he is putting a lot on the line trying to protect only one pair with no outs against a made flush.
If he was felling especially saucy pre flop, A3 and A6 are always in play.

1988, that's my hand range.
So would you push or call and then reevaluate the river? Or do you think I have him pinned and I should push and expect a call from hands that are trailing. i.e. AQ w/a diamond or QQ w/a diamond?

BTW, I don't like my turn lead w/that diamond falling. He can outplay w/our deep stacks.

I have a hard time pushing here. You have a huge stack for a 1/2 NL game, and you said he has you covered. I like to play a little weak here and see a river since you have the nut draw. If you think he will call with hands like AQ diamond or QQ diamond, he would also call if he actually hit the flush. I like to push early with hands like AA or I have a nice straight or flush & think the opponent has a hand he can't walk away from. I don't like pushing here because out of the wide range of hands, a lot of them have you beat. The ones that don't have you beat (QQ, AQ) - These are very poor hands to call with if you push. QQ can't possibly think he is winning if you push (And its a poor call to fish for the 2nd nut flush with only one card remaining). Same goes for AQ (although I could possibly see him calling with this).
I would call & if the river is a diamond, bet $250 or so - I would want a call.
If the river bricks, I would check & call anything around $200 or less. I would not call an all in. Sure you might win, but there are just too many ways to lose.
Very tough hand because I *think* you are losing on the turn.

I hear what you are saying..... I don't hate it though... You bet a fair amount & it is a good play if he has a big hand and is nervous of the flush. Since he played back at you pretty strong, I just feel like he has a really nice hand here & is asking you now if you have the flush. I get the sense he is trying to protect a hand like AA (Although I admit the $25 bet on the flop is throwing me off a bit. Maybe 66 is more likely. Or he could just be pretty conservative & is already guarding against the flush draw). I think you got some information from the bet. If you had checked & he bet $200, it could mean all sorts of different things. So I actually like the $70 bet - For information & to possibly slow him down.
Of course he could be bluffing, but they way he is playing back, I just feel like he has a big hand & is trying to protect.

I don't want to block bet $100 because then he can just move his chips in the middle and I have to fold. I'd be very happy to get to showdown cheap.
one more thing, definitely not KK.

Howzit - When are you going to let us know - The suspense is killing me.

sorry for the delay. . .
ok, so to call the $130 it's 36 + 50 +270 = 356. Just shy of 3:1
we were deep enough so that I could comfortably fold to an all-in on the river but possibly get another $150 on the river if I caught.
Well, I didn't and off came the 5 Shit. I check and he bets $200.
ugh, I convinced myself that if I called a 3:1 bet on the turn w/TPTk then I better call a 3.5:1 bet unimproved. he tabled QJ
I feel like a butchered almost every street. Playing a big ace out of position is one of my biggest leaks in my game.
Anybody got any better ideas preflop through the river?
Normally I like to excercise pot-control w/a big ace out of position but I don't see how I can maintain control of hte pot if a scare card hits on hte turn.
Man, poker is complicated.

Question: How much were you planning to check-raise the flop for?
Posted Thu Jul 07, 2005 11:59 am GMT by 1988 TR
Interesting hand. Obviously the missed big raise on the flop hurt (maybe, he very well might have called).... The guy bet just enough to keep you in - He played it pretty well.
You never know, that guy might have wanted to get all in on the flop..... Not that he should of, but people love their draws. :D
He did end up having the big hand - Just had the flush instead of the trips - Same difference I guess - He was still guarding against the bigger flush on the river.
The only thing I would have done different would have been a bigger raise on the flop - Probably $150 or so - But you already know that.
