Exciting Changes to the Vegas Poker Rooms

Posted Fri Feb 13, 2004 7:52 pm GMT by General Sal
So, while hanging with Cashman and Marshall in Vegas, I've noticed some amazing changes.

First, they are expanding the Palms poker room... adding a 9/18 game... which is weird but cool. Anyone who's been there knows how crowded that room can get. Sometimes they spread an 8/16 game, but usually it's 2/4 and 4/8. Expansion happens on March 20, so they may even have a grand opening for it... which usually mean chicks when it comes to the Palms.

Second, the more amazing thing is that they're adding a low buy in NO LIMIT game... incredible! That's consumer demand changing the face of poker... I'm sure it's influenced by tv. On the last night with Carson and Adam, we found that the Bellagio already spreads this game! Crazy.... time to bust out Brunson's old bible. I think Hellmuth wrote strategies about it in his book too.

Does anyone else smell blood?

I saw a no limit game at Trump in Gary this morning with a $200 buy-in and $2/5 blinds???????

OMG...talk about setting the table for a bloodbath. I kept watching that game...it was like seeing a car accident in slo-mo. I don't even know if I'd want any of that if I had the money to do it.

Saturday afternoon and only a 1 1/2 hr. wait? Nothing that fast around here. That's about the worst possible time to try to get a table, especially later in the afternoon. Then around 5:45 you finally get a seat...and three guys get up between 6 and 7 on meal buttons and you're playing 6 or 7 handed! Hard to get a full table back before 9:00. I HATE Saturdays.

So day before yesterday I tried a new ploy I stumbled on in St. Louis last week when the wait Friday night was 4+ hours. Got to the room at 6:00 am. Turned out to be a little late, because the 10-20 game had all but busted up by 5 (down to three players--wanted no part of that even if they were too tired to think--all three saw every flop. That's the same as having to ante $10 a hand.)

Anyway, played the only full table there, a $3-6 game. Plenty of action and nobody's thinking was exactly brilliant--but my cards were just average and I made only $50 in an hour and a half. Then we lost 4 players. I jumped to the $5-10, becuase by now it had 7 and I made the 8th. Did okay...then three players left by 9 o'clock. These tired-out all night players were dropping like flies, but I couldn't get the cards to take their money and everyone coming in was fresh. Jumped up to $10-20 when the table went to 8 players. Wasn't there but a half hour and the three all-nighters bailed and we're back down to 5. Jumped back to $5-10 because they had 8 again.

By this time the room manager was getting pissed, said I was screwing all the games up. I told him get me one table of 7 people who'd stay put for more than an hour and I wouldn't go anywhere--I was just desperately trying to find action, which was the absolute truth. Finally the $10-20 went to 8 people at 10:00 am. I asked to move (politely) but he wouldn't give me the seat because the $5-10 was down to five players again. I asked him to at least lock up that $10-20 seat for me and let me have it if he got a another $5-10 player to replace me, which he agreed to.

Then FINALLY, I got to play a full $10-20 game about 10:30. After bouncing around like a kangeroo all morning I was up about 150 bucks. Went on to win another $300 in the next 4 hours and went home to play Valentine. Maddening morning but it paid, and it was at least better than waiting around for hours.

I think there is a big poker fad right now, and I think I'm part of it . . . I know I've been running a tournament and playing on line, and I didn't do that stuff six months ago before all my friends cottoned on to WPT and started bagering me about the dusty set of chips on my bookshelf, and why my kitchen table was shaped like a stop sign Twisted Evil
