They'll "do the trick" without a doubt. You could do a lot better if you are looking for a true casino style chip (these are certainly not). 6¢ per chip shipped is a good price for this type of chip too. Better than almost any retail outlet can get them to you for.
I actually commend the seller for not saying these are clay chips, like many do. He says "metal core sealed by a composite resin" translated means a plastic chip with a steel slug in the middle for weight. NOTHING AT ALL wrong with this, it makes no difference in playing the game. Just don't get fooled that these are casino chips in any way.

If the total cost including shipping is a better price than you can find anywhere else, who cares how much they charge for shipping. Ebay does not charge a "rake" on shipping cost so many sellers burry part of their price in shipping.

Your right..the seller is a thief charging $35 shipping. Instead of charging $35 shipping the seller should list the item at $80 and offer free shipping..then the deal would be HOT!!

If you're interested in the standard 11.5g metal slug composite chips check Wal Mart. Was in about three weeks ago and they had a ton of 500-chip sets in the standard aluminum cases. Don't remember the exact price but think it was about $30. Obviously no shipping. They'd also done something really clever--they had a single chip with a hole bored in it wired to the case handle so you could see and feel what was inside. (Don't mistake these for the much lighter chips that Wal Mart has carried for years.)
Two things you may want to consider for a purchase like this:
1. I like chips where you can pick your color mix. I personally don't think that more than three colors are needed for hold'em.
2. You might be really happy later if you choose a chip that will take a 1" label. I'm working on labeling my set now using RPT NexGens and really like the results. Just bought my daughter a set of 500 11.5g Texas Hold'em chips from pokerchipshopping.com and am working on labels with her college logo on them. You can always do this later.
Both of these options throw you into a different cost category so feel free to ignore them completely. Good luck.

Some of the places on ebay do overcharge on shipping, others aren't so bad. A set of 1000 chips with a case, depending on chip weight can go well over 25lbs. To send a package of that weight and demensions via UPS will cost you close to $30 if i recall. Most places on ebay seem to charge about $40, and for the price it is still a good deal if you get the quality chips. You are saving a bundle over what you would pay to buy them in a gaming store.

A lot of the eBay sellers are probably adding in their eBay charges to the "shipping and handling" fees, and the less scrupulous are also padding the shipping fees so that they can pay less for their eBay charges, since eBay won't assess auction fees on the shipping. Even established businesses like 5star charge more for shipping with their eBay auctions than they do for direct sales from their site. That having been said, a coast to coast shipping, by UPS Ground (Zone 9) is going to cost about $24 for 600 chips (I did this recently), and the rate is subject to vary depending upon the packing materials and there is also a surcharge for delivery to a residential address.
