Table Talk question

Posted Wed Jul 13, 2005 7:27 pm GMT by lxNoMaDxl
I am able in a game to talk about the cards in my hand? Like can I say the exact cards I have or even say cards I don't? Like if I have K-Q and K-8-3 hits on the flop can I say "I got my pair of kings?" or is it illegal to say that I have a King in my hand? Would I be able to say "Got my pair" or anything like that? I'm asking this question b/c at a tournament I played in my friend was going heads up with this kid and a 2 hit on the flop. The kid said "I just triped up on the 2's" and if I remember right at a tournament on TV someone said something like that and Helmuth called him on it and said that it was illegal to talk about the cards in your hand. I just want this clarified b/c my friend feels like he was cheated. Since the kid said he made the tripes my friend pretty much didn't even think that he could have them b/c he thought you couldn't talk about your cards like that; and the kid ended up having the trip 2's.

First and foremost It is illegal to discuss, show, or talk about your hand during that current hand. Even if you folded you can't flip your cards over, or talk to another player in or out of the hand. However in home games people do this and if you want to stop this then you have to make a list of rules and enforce them.

If this is your home game you should start warning people who flip their cards over with others in the hand or for those who talk about their hands out loud or with other players and if they repeat this again then penalize them with a time penalty.

As for your friend who thinks he got cheated because he didn't think it was possible. You should tell him that in Texas Hold'em there are 169 possible starting hands and last time I checked which was hmmm last time I had pocket 2's(yesterday) it is one of the 169.

Hmmmmmm...

I think it's illegal, but I would also add that I haven't seen a table where someone was called on it. Maybe it would depend on the nature of the table; if it was more social, or more serious.

REGARDLESS, I would refrain about talking about what you have unless you are both in the hand, and heads-up against one other player.

If you're in a multi-way pot, you may upset a third party by giving someone else info about cards that are in/out of play. If you're out of the hand and you comment "I folded the nuts" when there's a 3 flush on the board, now the guy with K3s KNOWS he has the nuts, in which case I believe the other player would rightfully be upset.

What did I miss ... when did this number change from 91 (neglecting suit)?

To give away anything about the hand you folded while play is still in progress is all the way wrong. I might, in late position (for example), try to represent that I hit trips with a pair on the board; if you were to exclaim that you folded one of those, I would be rightfully upset.

Now, onto the subject of being in a hand. I honestly don't know to what extent you're allowed to comment on the hand. There's the physical thing (like reaching for chips before it's your turn to act) that I don't think anyone could legislate against.

Of course, it could be a false move too... Laughing

Is saying "what a good/bad flop for me" acceptable, but not "wow, I hit a set"? Not sure.

If I were on the receiving end of this banter, I don't know that I'd pay it much mind.
