Playing top pair from BB.

Ok, here's a situation that happens much more frequently than the previously discussed one.

You're in BB and you're allowed to limp in with 94o

4 people including SB see a flop of:

9 Heart 3 Heart 2 Spade

How do you play this?

What if the turn comes: K Diamond ?

Then say the river is 6 Spade

I'm interested to see how people play these hands in both limit and nl, as I find them to be tough hands to play.

Maybe I'll add more conditions to this hand later to make it a less of an "it depends" hand. But for now I just want some general thoughts.

I hate running into this problem.

Limit: I usually bet out in hopes to push most people out of the pot. When a face or ace hits the turn I'll bet again but if I get raised, I'll lay it down most of the time unless I have some sort of other draw.

No Limit: I'll bet the pot at least. If anyone goes over the top, I'm out. With the face/ace on the turn I'll check and see what kind of bet comes back at me. If its a small bet, I'll go back over the top. If its a big bet then I'll just lay it down.

To me the river is basically worthless in these hands. After the turn in both FL/NL the pot will be won or lost. Or in other words, I'll be going to a showdown or folding.

NL: I'd bet pot on the flop, check or check raise the turn, and raise the river. I play these hands farrrr too aggressively, but what I like to do is make the people with 9-10 hesitant to call, leaving only the people drawing for the flush. Makes sense or no? Sad

Limit I'd just bet every round, and only stop if i feel king-type resistance ^_^

My answer's for NL, I don't play limit.

You've got very little to go on info wise. Your big problem is A9 is a limping hand, same for K9, 33 and 22. I'd go one of two ways depending on the table read and how my table image is looking.

A: Check it with the intention of heavily sandbagging anyone who puts in a raise that doesn't scream danger. Being in the BB means you could have any two cards so I'd represent 93o. This also means you can get out free if you see some heavy action if say 22 and A9 are out there.

B: The safer play if your read on the table isn't so hot and the pots real small. Raise 2/3 of the pot to give the flush / strait draws bad odds and see what happens. Again from the big blind you look dangerous. just be prepared to let go if anyone puts the moves on you.

I'd go with A if your read's good and your image is tight.

Assuming you get to the turn it all gets a bit speculative. If no-one raised the flop (so you couldn't check-raise) it's check fold mode for me. You paid nothing to get this far and your only getting into trouble. You don't want to be defending second pair from EP.

If you check-raised, or just raised and got called you have a decision to make. I might lead strait out like I'm holding K9. You definitely want to say goodbye to the flush draws here and now, so I'm probably betting the turn assuming I didn't read anything to scary on the flop. Again be ready to throw it away if someone comes right back over the top.

The river, if you've come this far you've probably lost unless the only players left are on flush draws.

Any thoughts?

Depends on the table. If there is aggression coming from LP I look to check-raise the flop, if not, I just bet. Keep in mind when you've got 4+ in a hand the button is less likely to auto-bet when checked to. There's a very good chance it will get checked around if you don't bet.

I'd bet the turn and fold to a raise (unless he was maniacish). If everyone hangs around bet and fold to a raise--if this is anything like your typical low limit ring game you'll almost never get raised by a hand you are ahead of or have good odds to draw on here. If you see the river you can't fold to a single bet. Here's how I now look at it on the turn: I bet and get raised (everyone folds except for the raiser), I'm getting (the current pot+1)/2:1 on my calldown. Since I started looking at it this way I've cut back on my overly prideful calldowns. This is as opposed to saying I'm getting the current pot:1 on my call--I find viewing it this way results in getting trapped a lot).

I check-call the river without a good read.

This is a hand you will lose more often then not.

Yeah, I think you guys have covered that pretty well, no need to really get into details.

These are hands that I hate and tend to take too far, especially against the maniacs because I'll think they're just rying to bluff that pot.

Hopefully I can work on this problem.

Ditto - So many ways to lose here. A guy with 2 overcards on a flush draw can easily beat you without even catching his flush.

NL : check, check, check

u can save lots of money by accepting to give up your BB and not get in trouble with this kind of hand.
