Toughest Laydown Ever for Me

Posted Tue Jul 19, 2005 2:38 pm GMT by BeerWench13
$1/$2 NL at the Trop in AC last Friday night. A little background first. There are 2 players at my table that I've given credibility to and the others are mostly fisherman hoping to hit that big hand on the river. Standard raise preflop at the table is between $10 and $25.
I'm UTG. I look down to see two ladies staring back at me. I raise to $20 and it folds around to the guy I consider to be the best player at the table (other than myself, of course Wink ), he raises to $40. Everyone folds to me so I call hoping he has big slick or an underpair. Flop comes out J 8 3 rainbow. I lead out for $50, he comes over the top all-in. He has me covered so it would cost me another $245 and all my chips to call. I go into the tank for a while because I know this guy is a solid player. Under normal circumstances and with any other player at the table making that move, I'd have probably called. However, there's a little quiet voice in the back of mind that's telling me to fold. Well, for once I listen to that voice, announce that I can't believe I'm folding this hand and that I'm doing so because I have mad respect for him as a player, and I show my queens. He looks at me astounded and, I think, a bit disappointed, and asks how I could possibly fold that hand. At the same time he shows me his bullets in the hole and says "Nice laydown."
I guess I need to listen to that little voice more often. He seems to be right more often than not.

Then just flash him that smile and say "next time you try that, honey, I will have the hooks."

NH!

BeerWench,

That's a good story and a nice laydown.

The part I most enjoyed though was that the voice in the back of your mind is a "he".

But of course. He's right 99.9% of the time too. The real problem is that I don't listen to him like I should.

It's a good laydown & one you need to be willing to make in No Limit. The hand really smells like AA, KK, or JJ. The only thing you can really be hoping for is AJ - And if you really respect the player, it would be hard to put him on that given the pre flop action.

Good fold.

Next time though, please don't show him your cards. Now he knows that you are willing to lay down a big hand & he may put some more pressure on you in the future. I just think you are better off tossing your cards in the muck without giving him information he didn't pay for.

You're better off showing 64 suited.

I think he let you off easy. If the turn bricks, more chips get to go into hte middle. Still yet, nice laydown.

You always have to get your shot in don't you?
Just kidding.
Good advice actually. On most occasions this is a rule for me. I prefer never to let them know what I'm playing (or folding). In this situation, it actually set up two other players to try to push me around. It paid off a great deal. I also got a lot more respect with my preflop raises and was allowed to steal more pots with mediocre hands.

I agree. I don't usually show my cards but I don't have a problem showing them in a case like this. AS LONG AS YOU are aware the effect this will have on the table. In many cases showing a particular hand will allow you to set up a table for later action.
