bad move on my part?

playing 1/2NL at foxwoods last night, played extremely tight for the first two hours i'm there, down $100 already and i'm not getting anything preflop that i even think about playing.

finally get pocket 4's, call a medium sized bet preflop, i don't hit anything so i fold when someone bets. very next hand, pocket 4's again, i call a raise of $20 (probably not too bright with only 4's, i know, but with the hands i'd seen i felt compelled to play any pocket pair i got at that point) and get one caller after myself. the flop comes J 4 6 rainbow, so i figure i'm golden. the original bettor bets another $20 into me, i've only got $62 left in front of me so i push it all in figuring him for AA's or KK's. the guy behind me then goes all in for $50 total so i've got him on AJ, and the original bettor calls both all ins. no one showed their hand until the river, but on the turn another 6 came out, so i figure i'm golden as long as no face cards hit the board, and then an 8 on the river. full house, i'm beaming just waitin to pull in that pot. i throw out my 4's showing the boat, the original bettor shows K's for K's and 6's, and the guy that had called the $20 pre-flop bet shows J6 off, making his boat bigger than mine.

i couldn't believe it. J6 off preflop with a $20 bet and one caller in front of him. i just got up, said "nice game guys" and walked away.

just wondering what anyone else would have done with trip 4's in that situation. a little background info on the table, the guy that originally raised it played fairly tight but i saw him call bets with middle pair and middle kicker, and the guy that had the J6 had been fairly conservative until that point. was i wrong in pushing it all in? i mean, i figured myself to be the best hand on the flop, and i was until that other 6 hit.

Fold preflop. You'll never make enough by hitting a set to justify calling $20 preflop. If you had $300 in your stack and your oppoents were deep too it would be fine, but with only $100 or so it's not a winning call without a great read.

Post flop is good.

I generally (only) play fixed limit games because of the situation
you describe so I don't know how I would have played, that way I
can cut my losses when the 6 popped up.
Having said that 444 is a decent hand, if there is nothing much
on, but there is always the danger, as you found that someone
will have a higher set, or boat.

I would often play 44 on a big table (10 players), although perhaps
I shouldn't, but I would be very cautious even if I hit the set, too much
is in the lap of the popker gods in no limit!

Fold preflop. Once you got there, you shove. Pretty simple really.

thanks guys. it's usually a hand i'd fold to a bet like that, but like i said i hadn't seen anything all night. now i know though, just that much more knowledge to bring to the table next time.

I don't have a problem with playing 44 with a preflop raise depending on what read you have on the raiser. I called a $20 PF raise at a $1/$2 NL table in AC with 44 and scooped a $700+ pot. That has been my largest pot to date. However, I had a great read on the raiser, I had him on AK-turns out he had AJ (I was pretty close) and I was in the BB and figured I'd gamble a bit. If I didn't hit my set I would have folded on the flop and been out $20, but I did hit my set, had a great read on what draw he had and knew that if he missed he was going to push all-in (he was big stack at the table) to try to get me off of that pot.
Without knowing what kind of read you had on your opponents, it's difficult to say whether or not this was a good call preflop. Considering your stack size, I can't say that I'd have invested 1/5 of my stack on 4's.
As for the guy holding J6, well, that's a tough beat and I'd have certainly made a mental note regarding what types of hands he is willing to play, but all-in-all, that's poker. He got lucky for sure and I agree with your push on the flop. I'd have done the same. It just so happens that this was the hand that paid that guy for playing junk. Look at Gus Hansen. He makes tons of money off of hands like that.
