both players can make a straight, this uses 5 cards, and each player still has a card in their hand. is the second card a kicker? (jack and queen) this would mean that player 2 wins. or is it a tie because the kicker doesn't count because it is a "6th" card.

Straights don't have kickers. Try to get out of the habit of calling the 6th and 7th unused cards as "kickers", since they never break ties. Just my opinion, of course.

Not just your opinion, the actual rule! Best 5. Always always always. Period. End of discussion.

It's not the best 5 rule that's in dispute. The part that is my opinion is that the unused cards shouldn't be called kickers.
They're unused cards, not unused kickers.
I think if people stopped calling them kickers, it might cut down on "Who wins?" posts.
Just a personal pet peeve.

Ah, I see what you're saying.
Right, if there were a clearer distinction between what cards play and those that do not, it might make it easier for new people to understand. Probably is a specific term that I'm not thinking of.
On the other hand, it's not as if there isn't a wealth of easily-searchable information on most of these subjects.
