Feedback on a hand, please

Posted Tue Jul 26, 2005 1:33 pm GMT by Loonbat
Note: This was a suckout hand I shouldn't have won.

Let me set this scenario up ... my table image is solid - they've seen me only flip over monster hands (As, Qs, etc). I've seen about 20% of the flops, and if I've played a hand to the river, I've won.

So, looking for options here, and these are my questions:

-Would you have bet the flop and for how much?
-Would you have called the raise? Would you have reraised?
-How many would drop this hand on the turn to a bet and how big a bet would it have to be?

My gut tells me I should have bet the flop (as I did), called the raise, checked the turn, and folded if it were a blank. I, however, tried to convince my opponent I had more than I did. Comments always welcome - see below:

Well, nice win.

AK is a hand I hate. It always seems to miss the flop for me.

Would you have bet the flop and for how much?

Two different ways I play when this happens to me. If I feel that the guy is weak (all on image) then I'd put out a bet in the range of $30-$50. If the guy was a chaser/call station I would probably checked the flop hoping for an A or K on the turn or a J for a possible straight draw. Checking the flop also allows you to see if he'll coming firing on the turn.

Would you have called the raise? Would you have reraised?

I would have reluctanly called the raise hoping to hit the turn. You'd have to assume you are behind here and if you don't improve its time to get out.

One problem with this hand is your opponents kicker. With his re-raise on the flop you are most likely down to 3 outs assuming that he either has AQ or KQ. Even if you see the turn and catch an A or K, you don't know if he has made 2 pair or not.

You got lucky to catch a nice river... but the card is there to be used.

this is one of those hands that you feel bad about, but when you look at the preflop situation this guy made a mistake there

calling a reraise with a caller ahead of you with AQ is definetly not +EV because it usually means you are up against at least one PP, with the possibility of being up against AA, KK, QQ or AK ... especially with your table image at the time, i'd be letting go of this 90% of the time even though he had about the right pot odds to call ... last time i folded AQ to a raise, a reraise and a call it ended up being vs. KK and QQ with an ace on the flop ... but thats still a tough spot to be in ... anyways

that being said, once he hits his top pair top kicker and gets half his stack involved in the pot by raising you, you're either folding or seeing a river ...

you cant cold call that turn raise, you're pretty sure to lose $30 there ... either push or fold

Preflop reraise is a little smallish but ok.

Flop bet is too big. A pot sized bet on a Q33r board will only get called by hands that are beating you. There are no draws out there so a half pot bet is more than enough to get the information you need - if your opponent(s) paired up, had a PP, or has trips.

The minraise on the flop should set off an alarm. If you had at least a pair then you would have to go with your read on the opponent, your table image, etc as what to do next. But with A-high, I think its an easy fold so the turn is irrelevant.

all y'all like to pop it preflop w/AK. I don't because the stacks aren't big enough to defend a raggedy flop. I'd rather call behind and use position and keep the size of the pot under control in case an ace hits. If the stacks get deep then I'd probably pop it back preflop but I'd have to be doing it w/a lot of hands.

The way the hand turned out, I'd bet that spot a lot. It'll get hands like KQ, JJ-99 to fold. well they should anyway. Anyway, when you get check-raised this is a routine, standard fold.
