2 VERY expensive laydowns

8/16 last night, these hurt

AK in big blind, one player raises, very aggressive player 3 bets, one other calls, I call, the original raiser 4 bets and is all in, the aggressive player caps, we both call.

Flop 10 high, I check, aggressive guy bets, we call

Turn X, I check he bets, other guy calls, I call

River blank, I check, AP bets, we fold, he shows KQ, all in shows KJ, other play states that he mucked KQ as well, I folded a $300-350 pot for $18.

Next:
KK UTG I raise, solid player who rarely bluffs 3 bets, moron 4 bets, I cap. 5 way pot capped preflop ($200 already).

Flop A Heart 10 Heart 4 Diamond , I check solid player bets, all call, I call-2 outs, but 240 in the pot.

Turn blank, solid player bets, moron raises, damn, AA? set? $36 to call, $300 pot, I fold, 2 call.

River K Heart , DAMN DAMN DAMN, hoping someone has AA or flush draw, moron bets, solid player calls, last player folds.

Showdown-solid player 10 10 for set, moron QQ! RU serious? His bluff costed me about a $400 pot if I had decided to call $18 toward $350 w/ 2 outs-or possibly drawing dead.

DAMN HIM!

Anyway-I dont think I played either incorrectly, and I wouldnt be afraid to lay down either again, but if I had just paid off one of them, I would have had an up night instead of being down a bit.

I think both hands were played rather passively, just calling down with the hope of hitting your 6 and 2 outers. I think the fact that you described the better as aggressive shouldve pointed you to call in hand 1. As a general rule it is not that bad a mistake to call 1 more bet on the river in a big pot with a hand that even has a very slight chance of winning. A much bigger mistake is folding the best hand.

In hand 2, i think you shouldve led out on the flop. As the preflop capper, it is almost automatic to be betting the flop, unless the board is completely uncoordinated. Otherwise you are showing a lot of weakness by letting others draw to inside straight draws or flushes for free. The solid player will raise you at some point so then you know you're beat. Just check/calling all the way leaves you no idea where you are at.

1st hand, I tend to agree with you, I thought for sure that I was just looking at winning the side pot, if the all in wasnt the tightest guy at the table, I might have reconsidered.

2nd hand, I dont see how betting the flop will help. 5 players capped preflop I am up against at least one or two aces and one or two other pocket pairs. If I bet, I will surely be raised on the flop, turn or river, and I am just losing more money. If you are staring at a $300 pot would you fold even A4 with an A on the flop for a $8 bet? If I wasnt UTG, I might have, but I just cant w/ 3 hands behind me-2 of which are likely ahead.

I would have called on the first hand..

The second one I would have folded too. KK is pretty, but not when an A hits the board.. with pocket pairs, and an over out there, it's either set or don't bet.

I think you made good plays though, with all the action out there, it's tough to discern what's going on sometimes.

$8-16 getting a little loose down there at Canterbury isn't it?

Are you playing in the Fall poker classic?

8/16 is always incredibly loose at Canterbury.

I will play one, maybe 2 satalites for the main event. Anything else, who knows. I do have some vacation time coming!
