A good bluff?

Posted Wed Aug 03, 2005 12:33 am GMT by xDiamond_CutteRx
I consider this to be one of my best reads and bluffs ever, but it might also have been a horrible play. Anyone agree with my reasoning below?

PokerStars Game #2249136329: Tournament #10686373, Hold'em No Limit - Level V (75/150) - 2005/08/02 - 21:28:51 (ET)
Table '10686373 40' Seat #4 is the button
Seat 1: WPsports (1033 in chips)
Seat 2: Historymkr (7460 in chips)
Seat 3: Fronkensteen (2287 in chips)
Seat 4: maryann (5300 in chips)
Seat 5: IBSLAVN (11412 in chips)
Seat 6: Turn_Prophet (4140 in chips)
Seat 7: Jdubbs10 (1114 in chips)
Seat 8: stflet (670 in chips)
Seat 9: T/A Bird (3814 in chips)
IBSLAVN: posts small blind 75
Turn_Prophet: posts big blind 150
*** HOLE CARDS ***
Dealt to Turn_Prophet Nine of DiamondsTwo of Clubs
Jdubbs10: folds
stflet: folds
T/A Bird: folds
WPsports: folds
Historymkr: folds
Fronkensteen: folds
maryann: folds
IBSLAVN: calls 75
Turn_Prophet: checks
*** FLOP *** Seven of ClubsSix of DiamondsJack of Spades
IBSLAVN: checks
Turn_Prophet: bets 300
IBSLAVN: calls 300

Despite his big stack, IBSLAVN had proven to be a very weak-passive player. I had never seen him bluff at a pot, and I had stolen from him before. However, he usually liked to put in a lot of chips with premium hands. I figure my bet will be enough to get him to fold. He doesn't, but nor does he re-raise. I put him on either a 6 or some kind of weak draw.

*** TURN *** Seven of ClubsSix of DiamondsJack of Spades Ace of Diamonds
IBSLAVN: checks
Turn_Prophet: bets 800
IBSLAVN: calls 800

That Ace was sure to scare him, because he checked again! Now if he has a draw, I have to put him to the test. I'm shocked that he once again calls.

*** RIVER *** Seven of ClubsSix of DiamondsJack of SpadesAce of Diamonds Three of Spades
T/A Bird said, "go get'um prophet"
IBSLAVN: checks
Turn_Prophet: bets 2890 and is all-in
IBSLAVN: folds
Turn_Prophet collected 2500 from pot
Turn_Prophet: doesn't show hand
*** SUMMARY ***
Total pot 2500 | Rake 0
Board Seven of ClubsSix of DiamondsJack of SpadesAce of DiamondsThree of Spades
Seat 1: WPsports folded before Flop (didn't bet)
Seat 2: Historymkr folded before Flop (didn't bet)
Seat 3: Fronkensteen folded before Flop (didn't bet)
Seat 4: maryann (button) folded before Flop (didn't bet)
Seat 5: IBSLAVN (small blind) folded on the River
Seat 6: Turn_Prophet (big blind) collected (2500)
Seat 7: Jdubbs10 folded before Flop (didn't bet)
Seat 8: stflet folded before Flop (didn't bet)
Seat 9: T/A Bird folded before Flop (didn't bet)

Now some people might think I'm crazy here, but I really suspected he had no kind of hand at all. He may have been weak, but he was not stupid enough to call almost 3000 more with a measely pair of 6's or 7's. I think I represented the A or J correctly and stole a lot of chips from him. It was not the safe play, but I consider it one of my better bluffs and thought I had him read like a book.

You have position on him. Good for a bluff.

He didn’t raise against the SB, when he was the bigger stack. Normally I’d say this shows an unwillingness to be aggressive. A another good sign for a potential bluff.

You were heads up, which is the best number of people to try and bluff.

However those cold calls would scare the hell out of me and I’d really doubt the chances of that move on the river.

I’d have probably bet 200 on the flop. Check the turn and hope for a check on river. In other words lose Smile

Nice steal.

Worked this time but he could have easily been holding A6/A7 and gladly taken your chips on the river. Of course its pretty tough to put someone on a hand here since he limped in and flat called the whole way. I'd start thinking set after he just calls the turn bet.

triple barrel bluff against a weak nit.

good fold equity if you can stomach it AND correctly read their hands.

However, you better be doing this w/good hands as well. Because I've picked off many a busted flush draw when they make the last hurrah on the river.
